Warning? That’s like saying “Warning: McDonalds doesn’t serve Taco Bell food.” That’s not exactly a newsflash.
Besides the fact that this group is comprised of WV public school administrators (unbiased and objective, just ignorant of capitalism, no doubt), they accurately reveal the real rub - that they aren’t the final arbiters of education in the state or nation. They, like many public services, are a last resort, not a first choice. Their mandate is not to compete against the private sector or try to retain students.
Education isn’t supposed to be a job program; it is about providing educational opportunities for all West Virginia’s youth. This is literally like SNAP running ads and billboards trying to recruit more “customers.”
WE WANT LESS GOVERNMENT NOT MORE.
Government needing to educate less and less students is a GREAT thing because it means the private sector is meeting more of the needs of citizens. Public assistance should be a last resort, not the first.
A great attribute of our free enterprise system is that anyone (including any public school administrator) can become an entrepreneur to start a special needs school. And because we live in a FREE country, you can choose if that is a autism-specific school, a Down syndrome-specific school, a Baptist school, an atheist school, or any other niche you want to serve. That is what entrepreneurs do in every other industry. To insinuate that one restaurant is bad or wrong because it serves one type of food over another, or the intimates store doesn’t sell overalls, concerns me even more about who is educating our children. Because if they don’t understand the basic principles of freedom and free enterprise our nation is built on, we have bigger problems.
Thank you for exposing the general misunderstanding of role and scope public education plays in our nation.
Warning: All students are not accepted, do WV public schools have this same leverage? No, we accept all because we know everyone has a right to become the best they can be and we provide that opportunity everyday!!
