Some 📸 from a fun and educational night for participants in the Orange County, Florida 🍊 Mayor’s Citizens Academy!

There’s no better way for our citizens to see the incredible work our Hidden Heroes do each day than to see them in action first-hand. Participants visited three of our facilities, learned about inmate programs, and were able to meet many of our specialty units. From asking questions to sharing stories, we hope all our visitors left with a better understanding of what it takes to keep Orange County safe each day.

We hope they enjoy the rest of their academy, giving them an interactive look into our local government, one department at a time.

Congratulations to our OCCD staff members honored as mental health champions at the Annual CIT Banquet last week!🏆🧠

The Central Florida Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) held its Annual Appreciation Banquet, hosted by Aspire Health Partners and sponsored by NAMI Central Florida, to honor local law enforcement and community partners who have gone above and beyond to support the mission of CIT. The goal of CIT training is to help develop the skills and knowledge to effectively respond to mental health conditions.

Our very own Corporal Hall was recognized as a CIT Officer of the Year for consistently demonstrating compassion, professionalism and exceptional leadership in her work with individuals experiencing mental health crises.

Last year, the Carl A. Metzger Champion Award was established to honor individuals who exemplify a true commitment to the CIT mission. And this year, the inaugural champion award went to Corrections Chief Louis A. Quiñones, Jr. for his ongoing advocacy and leadership in improving outcomes for people in crisis. Chief Quiñones was commended for creating community partnerships and enhancing crisis response for those needing care.

Multimedia Coordinator Mike Davies was also recognized for his years of commitment to the Central Florida CIT in helping capture important moments just like these.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who attended in support of highlighting available mental health resources.

Last week, our staff members attended the 2026 CIT International Conference located right here in Orlando.

To make the conference even more special, Chief Quiñones was honored as the CITI 2026 Law Enforcement Executive of the Year. This award recognizes a Sheriff, Chief, or law enforcement executive staff member who actively supports CIT programs and demonstrates commitment to CIT core elements. This recognition highlights Chief’s accomplishments throughout his leadership to embed these elements into our jail operations to improve safety, de-escalation, and continuity of care for individuals in crisis.

This year’s theme, "CIT: Where Crisis Meets Compassion," brought together individuals from law enforcement to community leaders, united by a common mission: improving crisis response systems and building stronger partnerships between public safety and behavioral health services. With nearly half of our inmate population having mental health diagnoses, we continue to commit to improving outcomes for our population.

OCCD was proud to have not one or two, but three staff members receive their certificates of completion at the graduation ceremony for Florida’s CPM program last month.

Congratulations to Administrative Supervisor Curry, Lieutenant Gaines and Lieutenant Johnson for successfully completing this rigorous program. Florida's Certified Public Manager Program (CPM) is a premier professional leadership initiative administered by The Florida Center for Public Management.

As graduates of this nationally recognized leadership development program, they bring triple the vision and triple the impact to our journey to new heights.
