The Orleans Police Dept would like to make a public service announcement concerning the operation of E-bikes. Lately we have had several concerned citizens email, call or voice their concern in person or to our council members involving E-bikes.

In Indiana there are three classifications for E-bikes. Class 1,2,3. The only one that has any specific regulation is a class 3 which requires the operator to be at least 15 and if under 18 utilize a helmet. You can locate the 3 classes online to find out which one is a class 3.

The main points are no throttle able to maintain or reach a speed of 28 mph. This is not something you can differentiate by just looking. There has to be a stop and the item be inspected to figure this out. We have had several reports of mini bikes being operated on the town streets. These are primarily E-bikes. No matter what the outer shell looks like it, comes down to several specific factors such as gas powered or electric powered and reachable speeds along with assisted pedaling or throttle control.

With this being said we are asking parents to educate their kids and even other adults that the operation of an E- bike on a public roadway falls under the same requirements for operating a car. This also applies to traditional bicycles. You must stop at stop signs and obey all traffic laws. Use on a sidewalk is not prohibited but we all need to be aware that there is no insurance requirement on these E-bikes but they can travel as fast as 20 mph with little oversight.

However this brings up a concern that if you operate on a sidewalk and you strike a pedestrian, then there is civil liability. Whether you are an adult or a juvenile, where the parents are held responsible, this should be a concern to all who operate one.

Orleans PD would like the public’s assistance in identifying the owner of this vehicle that was involved in a hit and run accident. It appears to be a dark colored 2003-2007 ext. cab Chevrolet Silverado with a silver tool box in the bed.

Please take a moment to look at the newly adjusted speed limits in town along SR-37. These are projected to take place on or after July 22, 2026.

📍 State Road 37 in Orange County

Adjusted speed limits are planned for State Road 37 in Orleans following an INDOT traffic study through the community.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate Danny Huddleson, an 82 year old male, missing from around the Orleans area.

Danny Huddleson left his residence around 5:00AM this morning (06/30/2026) in a white straight truck. This truck says “Huddleson’s Machine Shop” on the front doors. Danny Huddleson has dementia and could be in extreme danger and in need of medical attention. It is unknown what he was last wearing.

Please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (812-723-2417) if you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Danny Huddleson.

Hello everyone! As most of you are aware, Officer Lundy is currently attending the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy . Throughout these 16 weeks of training, recruits have been given the opportunity to raise funds for the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting the Special Olympics. Students at the Academy will participate in a 5K run in support of individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. Officer Lundy will also be participating in the 5K. This event has been held by law enforcement agencies all over the country for more than 40 years, a shining example of dedication and commitment. Special Olympics Indiana Torch Run fundraising helps provide sports training and competition at no cost to children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout Indiana. Feel free to share!

On May 29, 2026, Thomas Hackney was reported missing to the Orleans Police Department. Thomas Hackney is believed to be in danger and possibly in need of medical assistance.

Thomas was last seen wearing green shorts and a gray t-shirt with the wording, “Worlds Greatest Grandpa”. Thomas is 6’01” tall, 285lbs, and has thin gray hair.

If you know the whereabouts of Thomas, please call your local law enforcement agency.
