She jumped to reach a drowning child, broke her back and foot on impact, and still tried to keep swimming.

In April 2019, 19-year-old Hanna Pignato was working on the rooftop deck of Joe's Crab Shack at Daytona Beach's Main Street Pier when she saw an 8-year-old boy struggling in a rip current below. His mother was screaming for help.

Hanna was a surfer and experienced swimmer. She ran downstairs, handed a customer her apron and belongings, and jumped about 20 feet from the pier toward the water.

But the water beneath her was only a few feet deep.

Hanna struck a sandbar. According to the fundraiser created for her, the impact fractured her lower back in three places and broke her right heel and the top of her foot.

And yet she kept swimming toward the child.

Hanna later explained that hearing his mother's terrified cries made her think about her own younger sister. She said she hoped somebody would do the same if her sister were ever in danger.

Before Hanna could reach him, another man got to the boy. He was ultimately brought safely from the water, while Hanna had to be helped ashore herself. She later underwent surgery on her foot.

Her friends then organized a fundraiser to help with medical expenses and recovery. That campaign ultimately raised $51,664 from roughly 1,100 donations.

Hanna did not end up being the person who pulled the child from the water. But knowing that doesn't make the decision she made on that pier any less extraordinary.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the employees of the Church Street Station Post Office, located adjacent to the South Tower, were busy at work inside the building. The Church Street post office was responsible for collecting, delivering, and processing mail from the World Trade Center buildings. As usual, window clerks were serving a steady stream of customers and letter carriers, who typically began their rounds inside the Center's buildings at 10:00 am, were organizing the day’s mail deliveries.

Once the first plane hit, a station supervisor and her safety officers sped through the building, escorting employees and customers outside and securing the post office vaults. No one in the Church Street Post Office was hurt, as the building had been successfully evacuated by the time the South tower fell just after 10:00 am. Although badly damaged, the Post Office was still standing.

After the September 11th attacks, the National Postal Museum accessioned into its collection several items from the Church Street Station Post Office. Objects included a damaged collection box from the street outside the post office, a beat-up mail satchel cart used for deliveries in the World Trade Center complex, and register receipt tape dated 9/11/01 8:47am.
