Dog Killed During Hit-and-Run Investigation

On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at approximately 3:07 p.m., Oroville Police Department officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a black four-door sedan in the 3000 block of El Noble Avenue.

While officers were investigating the collision, at approximately 4:30 p.m., dispatch received an additional report of a reckless driver in a stolen vehicle being pursued by the vehicle’s owner. The suspect vehicle reportedly struck a curb, lost one of its tires, and continued driving recklessly.

Officers located the suspect vehicle in the 4800 block of Virginia Avenue. After confirming the driver’s identity, officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. The suspect was taken ultimately taken into custody and placed into a patrol vehicle for transport to the Butte County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and hit-and-run.

As officers completed their investigation, a large pit bull from an unrelated nearby residence escaped from a fenced enclosure and aggressively charged at and attacked officers.

One officer was able to create distance from the dog and attempted to deploy a Taser. As the dog continued its attack and lunged toward another officer, that officer discharged one round, striking and killing the dog.

The dog was unrelated to the original investigation. No officers, members of the public, or the detained suspect were injured during the incident.

Press Release: Oroville Police Arrest Suspect Following Stabbing of Three Family Members

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the Oroville Police Department (OPD) responded to the 1900 block of D Street following a report that multiple people had been stabbed. The suspect was located and taken into custody shortly after officers arrived.

The department received its first 911 call from an adult female who reported that she had been stabbed by her grandson. Officers were immediately dispatched and, while responding, learned that two additional victims had also been stabbed.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Johnny Stanchfield of Oroville, allegedly stabbed three family members and a family dog before fleeing the property.

Upon arrival, officers located the three victims in different areas of the home. Officers immediately began providing emergency medical aid while additional personnel searched for the suspect.

Within minutes, the department received a separate 911 call reporting that an individual with apparent dog-bite injury was at a nearby market on Myers Street. Officers responded and located an individual matching the suspect’s description. Due to the circumstances of the incident, officers held the suspect at gunpoint before safely detaining him. He was subsequently provided medical treatment for his injuries.

All three victims were transported to an area hospital for surgery and treatment. All three victims who sustained multiple stab wounds have undergone treatment and surgery and are now in stable condition. The suspect was also the restrained party in active court protection orders protecting two of the victims.

A family dog sustained multiple lacerations and was transported to a local veterinary clinic for treatment; further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the animal stabbing may prompt further charges. We are happy to report that the dog underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

Stanchfield was arrested and booked on three counts of attempted murder, two counts of violating a criminal protection order, and one count of violation of probation. Stanchfield also had a warrant out for his arrest for a separate violent act.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Oroville Police Department will host a Community Conversation and Public Q&A to provide clear information and address concerns.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: K9 Loki Edition

It started with four words no working dog ever wants to hear:

"I'll be right back."

Officer Vanpoole (also known as "Mom") stepped into the lobby to handle a call for service, leaving K9 Loki behind.

At first, he waited patiently...

For approximately 14 seconds.

Then the intrusive thoughts began.

What if she forgot me?

What if she went outside?

What if... she's petting another K9?

After what felt like an eternity (roughly 1½ minutes), Loki decided the only logical solution was to launch a search and rescue mission... for his own handler.

Concerned coworkers attempted to comfort the distraught K9.

Pets? Rejected.

His favorite ball? Unacceptable.

A treat? "Do I look like I'm in the mood for snacks?" (his words exactly, trust us)

Following her scent through the hallways, Loki finally located Officer Vanpoole...

Only to discover they had been separated by the greatest obstacle known to canine kind:

A lobby window.

There she was.

Just a few feet away.

Close enough to see.

Too far away to reach.

Loki gazed through the glass, convinced his cries could never pe*****te the mysterious invisible force field. As the heartbreaking separation stretched on (a devastating total of about 6 minutes), he accepted his fate and crawled beneath a desk to await whatever the future held.

Then...

The door opened.

Mom returned.

The reunion was emotional. The tail resumed wagging. Order was restored to the universe.

K9 Loki has since made a full recovery and has returned to active duty. Though he has requested that "Mom" never disappear into the lobby without him again.
