To enhance public safety and ensure effective communication during emergencies, Butte County is pleased to announce the availability of ALERT FM emergency notification receivers for residents living in Butte’s rural communities.

Recognizing the challenges residents face during power outages and the absence of cellular service, these advanced receivers are designed to deliver emergency alerts issued by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office without reliance on electricity or cellular service. Utilizing existing FM radio signals, the ALERT FM system disseminates emergency messages within seconds. When an alert is received, the device activates a flashing light, an audible siren, and displays the emergency message.

Each receiver operates on Micro-USB power with a single AA-battery backup, capable of lasting up to three weeks without external power, ensuring continued communication during crises.

The ALERT FM receivers will be provided free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible community members living in the following areas: Bangor, Berry Creek, Butte Creek Canyon, Butte Meadows, Butte Valley, Clipper Mills, Cohasset, Concow, Forbestown, Forest Ranch, Magalia, Stirling City, Honcut, Palermo, Robinson Mill, South Oroville, and Yankee Hill.

To determine eligibility for a free receiver, residents must apply in person at 202 Mira Loma (Klamath Room) in Oroville, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm during one of the following scheduled dates:

- July 10, 2026
- August 7, 2026
- September 4, 2026
- October 2, 2026
- November 6, 2026
- December 4, 2026

In 2024, older adults lost nearly $2.4 billion to fraud, and because the vast majority goes unreported, that figure represents only a fraction of the real harm being done. Staying connected is one of the best ways to help keep older adults safe.

Check in on older loved ones, talk openly about scams, and support family caregivers. Learn the warning signs of abuse, help verify suspicious calls or messages, and speak up if something doesn’t seem right.

Together, we can help older adults live with safety, dignity, and respect.

🚨 Have a plan for your animals before an emergency happens.

Whether you have cats, dogs, horses, birds or livestock, every animal in your household should be included in your evacuation plan.

Before disaster strikes:
• Identify friends or family outside the area where your animals can stay
• Prepare emergency supplies ahead of time
• Keep current photos and identification for all animals
• Know where you will go if you need to evacuate

Emergency animal shelters should be considered a last resort. Animals are often less stressed when they can stay with familiar people and in calmer environments.

There are new CalFresh work and community engagement requirements. This is called the Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) rule.

Starting June 1, 2026, you may have to work or participate in a community engagement activity if you:
• Are between the ages of 18 and 64, and
• Do not have a disability.

Recent federal law passed by Congress and signed by President Trump newly limits CalFresh to certain groups of lawfully present noncitizens. However, many individuals remain eligible for CalFresh, including household members who are U.S. citizens and those with certain qualifying immigration statuses.
