Warm weather is here—and the river looks inviting. But don’t let the sunshine fool you.

Cold rivers in our area stay dangerously cold year-round, especially those fed by snowmelt from Mount Rainier. Even on a hot day, the water can trigger cold water shock in seconds—causing an involuntary gasp, loss of muscle control, and rapid exhaustion.

Every year, people underestimate these conditions. It only takes a moment.

Before you head to the river:
• Know the risks of cold water immersion
• Avoid fast-moving or deep water
• Wear a life jacket near the shoreline
• Never enter the water alone
• Keep a close eye on children and pets

Enjoy the beauty of our rivers—but respect their power.

Cold water. Fast effects.
When in doubt, stay out.

April’s not even over, so why are we talking about a summer burn ban? 🔥

Because June 1 will be here before you know it. That’s when the Stage 1 burn ban takes effect in unincorporated Pierce County.

Now is a good time to finish yard cleanup and take care of any outdoor burning.

What’s not allowed starting June 1:
• Burning yard debris
• Burning for land clearing

What’s still allowed:
• Recreational fires in approved fire pits
• Barbecues (gas, wood, or charcoal)

Plan ahead to avoid last-minute burning and help protect our communities from wildfire risk.
