Was a hot night last night for our regular monthly training. Members completed the second half of our Fire Behavior training module last night with a live burn led by Training Officer Logan Watts.

This training focused on identifying and controlling interior smoke, fire, and ventilation conditions to control the fire environment. These things are done directly through our firefighter's decision making and actions and directly impact incident outcomes. A portion of the training also focused on identifying and connecting what is seen on the outside of the structure due to interior conditions via proper size-up.

Members who did not do the interior portion worked on the fast water set up we have instituted to speed up water supply for the initial minutes of interior operations, as well as pump operations with the new SAM Boost system.

We are excited that the next generation nozzles have shown up, they will be placed into service after install from SAM System Technicians. These new nozzles will be smaller and also contain a mayday beacon to help orient and find potential lost, trapped, or downed firefighters.

During this morning's thunderstorm a large tree located at South Polk and Ohio streets was struck by lightning. Homeowner asked for some assistance as the hollow part of tree caught fire. We ran a silent alarm and foam was applied to the burning hollowed out area. Currently Ohio Street is closed from Polk Street to State Street, but alley is accessible while homeowner has the tree accessed with possible removal happening.

Happy Birthday to Osceola Firefighter Kyle Mentink. Kyle is always there to lend a helping hand with any of our project and is a very active member of the department. Kyle is also one of our firefighters that joined at age 18 and rejoined after he moved back to Osceola. With his connections , Kyle is always able to get vehicles to us for extrication drills and goes that extra mile to get them to the station. Kyle was also responsible for getting the 1929 Fire Engine to the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center and back home a year later. Thank you Kyle for your dedication to your department and community and have a great birthday. See less

Osceola Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a car fire yesterday (8/9/26) on Highway 92 around H Blvd. During the incident we had a car ignore our traffic stop as he felt he waited for 20 minutes so he can decide for himself that it was ok to proceed. We had both lanes of traffic closed to deal with the fire and the driver drove on the grass shoulder around the fire truck nearly striking one of our firefighters coming around the front of the fire engine. He got to visit with one of Polk County Sheriff's finest about his decision.
It's sad when we have to have a reminder like this for the 5% that think they are entitled and the 95 % have to hear it. After the fire was suppressed (approximately 10 minutes) we had traffic up and going on a one lane basis. Its always our goal to get the incident taken care of in a timely manner and most of all get our firefighters home to their families. A huge thank you to the Polk County Sheriffs Office and to Tonniges Chevrolet for helping get traffic moving again, also people who take chance and want to get home to their families. PLEASE USE CAUTION AROUND ANY EMERGENCY SCENE!!!!
