‪Carbon Monoxide Safety Alert! Please take a minute to clear ice off your homes intakes and exhausts or it may back up into your home. CO has no odor, can’t see it- the silent killer! Do you have CO alarms? Are they where they need to be? Are the batteries fresh? Are the alarms expired? Ask yourself these questions or reach out to your local fire department as it might save your families life! Stay warm and safe!

This was taken at West Lake today. PLEASE! Stay off the ice. This is extremely dangerous.

10/23/2019

A fire in downtown Osceola 1 a.m. Nov. 22, 1917 resulted in the tragic death of Marshal Richard Eggleston and Firefighter George Griffin. During a fire at Frick’s Drug Store on the south side of square an explosion occurred causing a wall to collapse and killed both Men.

Nearly a decade later the City of Osceola was able to purchase the first water pumping fire engine a 1928 American LaFrance. The much needed upgrade allowed the Department to safely fight fires for many years until it was upgraded to a newer engine in approximately 1945. In 2018 the Department was able to reacquire the Engine.

Currently our Friends at Farm Boy Garage are restoring her to her former glory. There will be a slight modification as it will be fitted with a casket bracket to assist Fire Fighters to their final resting place.

The Department will also use the truck for parades, education visits, and other public events.

Farm Boy Garage has partnered with us and began the restoration. However, we need your help. Donations may be made to honor the Sacrifice that Eggleston and Griffin made protecting the citizens of Osceola and help provide a fitting tribute for those in the future.

UPDATE:
Farm Boy Garage is very proud to be involved with the restoration project of this 1928 American LeFrance Fire Truck for the Osceola Volunteer Fire Department. You have seen the posts, and the event we had to kick off fund raising for this project for the Fire Department, and now we can provide the information for how to donate.

Anyone interested in donating to this fund raiser, or assisting with collecting donations, this is where the donations need to be made:

Osceola Volunteer Firefighters Association 1928
PO Box 399
135 West Washington Street
Osceola, Iowa 50213

Remember, this truck was originally purchased in 1928 by the Fire Department after losing a Firefighter and having another seriously injured in a structure fire on the Osceola square. The truck was sold or traded for more modern equipment years later, and only recently the Fire Department located the truck and purchased it again with plans for restoration. They plan to use this truck for parades and events as a memorial to their fallen Firefighters, and to all Firefighters everywhere. They also plan to fit the truck with detachable equipment that will allow them to use the truck to carry any of their fallen Firefighters to their final resting place. They would love to extend that use to other Firefighters from other departments as well if funding is procured that would allow that service.

Please share this information with everyone you can and assist us with making this Dream come true! All donations can be utilized for tax deduction purposes because the Firefighters Association is a nonprofit organization, all donations WILL be used for the complete restoration and use of this truck. SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES!

WESTPORT - Occupants of a Roseville Road house were able to get safety out of the structure after a fire broke out in the laundry room on Tuesday.

Assistant Chief Michael Kronick said the people were able to escape safely because of an automatic fire alarm alerted them.

“This fire is a testament to the fact that smoke detectors save lives and in this case, alerted the occupant and kept fire damage minimized,” Kronick said in a release. “Without the early detection of the fire, the outcome of this incident may have been much worse. Residents are reminded to check and test their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly.”

Each year, the Red Cross responds to an average of more than 62,000 disasters, the vast majority of which are home fires. So we set a goal to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries in the US by 25%.

American Red Cross - Serving Greater Iowa is partnering with Clarke County Iowa Emergency Management Agency, Clarke County CERT and Osceola Fire Department to install FREE smoke alarms on Saturday, October 12.

If you'd like to have an alarm installed, please sign up at www.getasmokealarm.org
