THIS WEEK: Next up in the data center saga:
1. Town of Omro Planning Commission
Wednesday, August 5th at 6:30 pm
4205 Rivermoor Rd. Omro
Agenda: Discuss Winnebago Countyโs Potential 12-month moratorium on data centers
Public comment is welcome and encouraged! Share with the board why you do or do not support a data center moratorium or data centers in general. As the current ordinance amendment stands, I donโt see any mentions of eliminating non-disclosure agreements or requiring public notification when council members are approached about a proposed project.
2. Winnebago County Planning and Zoning Committee
Thursday, August 6th at 4:00 pm
112 Otter Ave. Oshkosh
Agenda: Action may be taken to amend chapter 23 of the Winnebago County General Code to Impose a 12-month moratorium
Public comment is not available at this meeting, but the board will deliberate +/- vote on a 12-month moratorium. See comments for a copy of the ordinance.
The most important thing you can do if you feel strongly about this issue is SHOW UP AT THE MEETINGS! Share what your concerns are! Data and information to back up your position always help, but even if you havenโt done a lot of research, voicing your concerns is so important!
If you think this canโt happen to us, the town of Pacific (population 2,800) was approached about a data center last fall with that idea getting shut down. Wisconsin Rapids is battling a current data center proposal. Menomonie had a proposed data center that was well along in the process of getting approval after multiple closed-door meetings until the public was notified. The backlash from the community was swift, ultimately leading to a grassroots effort that blocked the project. There are other proposals, but these ones are smaller communities.
