JOB POSTING

Hello,

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a summer intern in our Property Planning Section. This position may be of interest to students pursuing careers in natural resources planning, outdoor recreation planning, or GIS. The Property Planning Intern will:

Assist the DNR’s Property Planning Section in preparing the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) and master plans for department properties. A property plan, also called a master plan, establishes the level and types of public uses and the authorized resource management and facility development that may take place on a DNR property. The department prepares a SCORP every five years to evaluate outdoor recreation supply, demand, trends and issues throughout the state. The Property Planning Intern will assist planning staff in a variety of tasks related to the SCORP process including working with planning staff to gather and synthesize geospatial and survey data from partners and existing datasets, creating maps to aid the SCORP process, and researching and creating briefs on issues related to outdoor recreation. This position will also aid in adding data to planning documents, assisting planners in developing property-specific objectives and prescriptions and reviewing for compliance with applicable administrative code and department policy, document design and formatting, and assisting in developing and conducting public input processes.

The position will be a good opportunity to learn about the DNR, learn how planning and policy are involved in DNR’s property management, and put the skills students are learning to use in a state agency setting. More information about DNR Property Planning can be found on the DNR website.

If you could share this position with students that may be interested in applying, I would appreciate it. Interested students should apply through the 2022 State of Wisconsin Student Diversity Internship Program listing on WiscJobs. The Property Planning Internship is position number 370132 in the Student Diversity Internship Catalog. The deadline to apply is January 31st.

Thank you, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Job opportunity!

Greetings!

My name is John Sinclair and I am a conservation warden (a state law enforcement officer) for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. My passion for natural resources, for communication, and for helping others led me into this rather unique and fulfilling career. I am reaching out with the hopes of forming some new connections, telling my story, and learning about you and your students.

Part of my role is to assist with our agency’s recruiting and outreach efforts, and I am reaching out to you to promote the conservation warden career opportunity and offer my assistance to anyone who might be interested in learning more. Our warden team is responsible for protecting natural resources, which are essential for the lives, health and happiness of every person. We are committed to creating a culture of inclusivity, building trusting relationships, and thoughtfully engaging and serving our diverse public. The work we do is important and relevant to everyone, yet many people do not even know about our unique natural resources-focused law enforcement career.

The global pandemic has greatly impacted recruitment efforts, and undoubtedly has left students more uncertain about future career prospects. In an effort to better connect with students, we’ve begun reaching out to individual professors/instructors to start conversations and explore possible recruiting and educational partnerships. We’ve begun hosting virtual presentations, and would be happy to have a conservation warden speak with your class virtually during one of your normally scheduled lectures. We can even tailor a presentation to ensure it is relevant to your coursework. Similarly, if you know of anyone in the student body who might have an interest in natural resources and a passion for helping people, we’d love to talk to them one-on-one!

We plan to open a hiring process for conservation warden positions in April of this year, so we are trying to reach out to as many people as possible to share our story, learn about them and offer advice on becoming a conservation warden! Students who apply in April will still have the opportunity to complete their spring/summer college coursework before they are actually hired on with the Wisconsin DNR.

· Attached is our 1-page recruitment flier, specific to the Wisconsin conservation warden career

· We have a great recruiting website and encourage students to sign up (on the website) to receive email updates about or hiring processes: https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/wardenrecruitment/

· Lastly, below is our most recent recruitment video:

Thank you for your time and any assistance you can offer. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this information with your students and/or consider hosting us for a virtual presentation. We find that students are often more competitive in our hiring process if they reach out to us ahead of time. I hope to hear from you and your students!

John

Geographer Scott Warren is featured in a new documentary film "USA vs Scott" which chronicles his humanitarian aid work with the organization No More Deaths. The film highlights Scott's role in community education and activism as he awaits trial for two counts of harboring illegal immigrants after providing water to two of the thousands of migrants who enter the US through the desert.
Watch the 16 minute documentary here:

Scott Warren's arrest for providing shelter to two migrants posed a question to his community and the court: Under what circumstances could humanitarian aid be deemed illegal?

The American Association of Geographers (AAG) strongly opposes the sudden and unnecessary modifications to the Student and Exchange Visitors Program by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The proposed changes would revoke the legal status of international students whose academic institutions plan to offer online-only courses this fall in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the students to transfer (effectively impossible at this point) or leave the country. Additionally, no new visas will be issued to students enrolled in colleges or universities with online-only courses for the fall 2020 semester.
