Happy National Paperclip Day!

Today we celebrate the tiny, humble hero of office life — the mighty paperclip.

Here in Winnebago County Government, paperclips pull more weight than you’d think. They quietly hold together contracts, board resolutions, land records, birth records, and the occasional stack of “sign here” paperwork.

From organizing the decisions that shape our community to keeping generations of local history fastened neatly in place, the paperclip is always on duty — no complaints, no coffee breaks.

So here’s to these unsung champions of organization. Take a moment today to appreciate the simple brilliance of our dependable friends that refuse to let go… literally.

Know that, like these ubiquitous bits of office essentials, Winnebago County is here to help you hold it together as well.

Here’s the latest on traffic changes and project progress along the State Highway 21 corridor from Omro to Oshkosh:

Project Wide Detours
• State Highway 116: Detour will be removed late Friday night and fully open by early Saturday morning.

I had the great honor of speaking, and presenting Hmong Service Center Inc. Scholarships, at this year’s Hmong National Memorial Day Festival. It is always an event filled with tremendous community, delicious food, and deep respect for the Hmong soldiers and individuals who fought alongside US forces in the Secret War. The legacy of those who gave all is reflected in the community their families were able to build here in Winnebago County and across the US.

“This event… is a celebration of culture, family, history, resilience, and community.”

“Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for your culture, your resilience, and your commitment to making Winnebago County a better place for everyone.”

As we wrap up National Skilled Nursing Care Week, it was great to visit with our caring and dedicated Park View Health staff, enjoy some local food truck meals (the volcano chicken was delicious), and thank them for the award winning work they do every day.

You may notice flags at 1/2 staff as each year May 15 marks the day we observe National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day dedicated to honoring the brave law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Here in Winnebago County, we pause to recognize and remember the deputies of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, as well as the dedicated officers serving in Fox Crossing, Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Omro, and Winneconne, and every community across our county. Their commitment to protecting our neighborhoods, responding in times of crisis, and serving with professionalism and courage does not go unnoticed.

As part of this national day of remembrance—established by Congress in 1962 and observed during National Police Week—U.S. flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of fallen officers. Across the country, memorial services, a candlelight vigil, and gatherings for survivors take place to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

Today, we honor those who gave everything in service to others—both here at home in Winnebago County and across the nation. We also stand with the families, colleagues, and communities who carry their memory and legacy forward.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.
