Wilcox Library turns 60 this year!

As part of a major fundraising campaign celebrating William Penn College’s 90th anniversary, a new library building was proposed in 1962. At that time, the library was located on 3rd floor Penn Hall and the book collection had ballooned to 50,000 volumes. Study space and books were spread out into the hall. Penn Hall was never meant to be a permanent location for the library and the building was beginning to show damage due to the weight of the collection over several decades.

Donations large and small poured in from students, alumni, and community members from across the country to support the new library construction project. Dr. Edgar Wilcox, a 1900 graduate, gave $80,000 in November 1962 to help reach the fundraising goal and became the library’s namesake. Construction began in Fall of 1963 and was opened to William Penn students, faculty and community on November 30, 1964.

The Wilcox Library is always excited to share what amazing work our faculty, staff, & students are out there doing-

Brant Bollman, director of Theatre Arts at William Penn University and puppetmaster at Uplifting Puppet Co. has been honored with a 2024 Des Moines Art Week Fellowship.

He will work with members of the Drake neighborhood to create a night market of vendors, food and entertainment scheduled for the evening of June 14th, culminating in a lantern puppet parade down Kingsman Avenue.

The theme of the parade will be 'The Magic of the Night.' He will work with Drake neighborhood creatives to craft a giant glowing female spirit of the night. The community is invited to participate in pop-up lantern workshops and other art-making opportunities so they can join the lantern parade.

At William Penn, Bollman directs college theatre events, teaches creative arts and theatre classes and sculptures giant puppets with his students for the annual Oskaloosa Lighted Christmas Parade.

The Wilcox Library family lost a good friend last week. Many of you likely met Cincy during finals over the years where she faithfully served as one of our longest running and most talented finals friend. Cincy knew all the tricks to help entertain her student friends during stressful times. Cincy was much loved and will be greatly missed. 🌈
