🌼 More Than Just Hunting Opportunities 🌼

Mahaska County Conservation’s natural resource areas provide so much more than places to hunt—they are living landscapes filled with beauty, diversity, and discovery for everyone to enjoy.

This video was taken at the Swanson-Lomax Wildlife Area and showcases a young prairie reconstruction featuring a rich diversity of native wildflowers. These prairies provide critical habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, especially pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects that play an important role in healthy ecosystems.

One of the most fascinating things about a prairie is that it is always changing. From season to season and year to year, different plants emerge, bloom, and thrive, creating new experiences with every visit. We encourage everyone to get outside, explore, and discover the natural wonders that Mahaska County has to offer. Whether you’re hiking, birdwatching, photographing wildflowers, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk, there’s always something new waiting to be found. 🌿🦋🌻
