Last weekend, I traveled to the beautiful driftless hills of Wisconsin to visit the Savanna Institute's new campus in Spring Green 🌳. SavannaInstitute.org promotes and develops agroforestry in the Midwest. Agroforestry is a big word that means trees on farms like windbreak, alley cropping, timber pasture, etc. The event was an excellent occasion to network with knowledgeable agroforestry specialists! By the way, the Savanna Institute has hired a new technical support provider in Iowa. Good management of timber pastures has much potential in Southeast Iowa to increase animal wellbeing and weight gain, make profitable tree harvest, sequester carbon, and protect the land! And according to recent research from Kansas State University, planting part of a field with a windbreak can increase the overall field profitability by 5% for soybean and has no impact on corn. It seems like a good deal! Yes, agroforestry adds a layer of complexity to farm management, but it offers many options to diversify revenue and protect the land. Several programs provide financial assistance to get you started. Get in touch to learn more!
