Paddling through a mangrove tunnel feels a little like slipping into a secret world 🌿🚣‍♀️✨

The shade of their leafy branches make it cooler, the water gets calmer, and suddenly you’re surrounded by one of Florida’s most important trees!

Mangroves do a lot more than create beautiful tunnels, their roots stabilize shorelines, filter pollutants from the water, store carbon, and provide nursery habitat for fish, crabs, shrimp, and countless other species! Many of the animals we love seeing on our tours spend part of their lives protected within these tangled roots! These ecosystems work hard every day to keep Florida’s coast healthy, protected and thriving!

We spotted a snowy egret hunting along the shoreline on our Sarasota clear kayak tour! These birds are easy to recognize by their bright white feathers, black legs, and yellow feet, which they actually use to stir up fish and small crustaceans in shallow water before striking!

Snowy egrets were once heavily hunted for their feathers during the plume trade of the late 1800s and almost hunted to extinction. It’s estimated that at the peak, over 5 million birds a year were killed for hats. If it weren’t for conservation organizations and a change in women’s fashion we might not have these and many other magnificent birds!
