The friends of Oscar Scherer State Park, Inc. helps support park projects, resources and events. Friends of Oscar Scherer Park, Inc. Mission Statement:

To support the preservation and protection of the cultural resources and natural systems that are part of the Park. To promote public awareness of the ecological importance of the Park through interpretive programs, special events, and social func

tions. To provide volunteer projects, services and general assistance to the Park. Additional Information:

In 2019, the Friends of Oscar Scherer Park, Inc. volunteered over 26,000 hours of service to the park and was 5th in the state. Contact the park for additional information.

Kruse to Transfer to Koreshan

Oscar Scherer State Park Manager Matt Kruse will be leaving the park September 1st to take a similar position at Koreshan State Park south of Fort Myers.

Members of Friends of Oscar Scherer Park have expressed how much they will miss Matt’s leadership, and, in return, he says he will miss working with such a dedicated, industrious group of rangers, staff and volunteers. “Working together to protect the park, preserve scrub-jay habitat, and greet visitors has been a highlight for me,” stated Matt.

At his new position, he’s looking forward to learning more about the historic utopian society that settled at Koreshan and also the Calusa Indians that inhabited the area for thousands of years.

Quick note about another state park. Pictured is a glamping site at Lake Louisa State Park. I also passed their large cabins on Dixie Lake and walked through a stand of cypress to the swimming beach at Lake Louisa. Lots of meadows, rolling hills, wooded areas, hiking trails, horse trails, large campsites and primitive camping on 4,500 acres. --Joel Robbins, FOSP Nature Center Volunteer.
