May 18-24 marks EMS WEEK, when we recognize the essential work that EMS providers perform daily. As the country's largest EMS provider, the fire service is an essential component of modern emergency medicine. Fire-based EMS cares for any patient, any day, at any time. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), through the EMS Section, is proud to celebrate the hard work of our fire-based EMS providers this week and every day.

The warmer weather and budding trees have many of us thinking about spring cleaning. As we get the grill and lawnmower ready and begin to think about the various projects we want to tackle in our homes and yards, it’s always good to be mindful of minimizing the risk of fires and other hazards. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe during the spring cleaning season:
• Properly store gasoline, flammable, and combustible liquids
• Carefully dispose of rags with paint and stain
• Clean and inspect grills to ensure they’re in good working order
• Keep leaves and debris well away from your home
• Clean out your clothes dryer and exhaust vent pipe
• Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries if needed
