🚲 E-Bikes in Indiana: What You Need to Know (Including Ossian Rules) Expand to Read..
E-bikes are becoming more common around town, and most people are trying to do the right thing...but there are a few important rules that many riders don’t realize.
Here’s a quick breakdown 👇
⚡ Indiana E-Bike Basics
• E-bikes must have fully operable pedals
• Motor must be 750 watts or less
• Max assisted speed is up to 28 mph (Class 3)
👉 E-bikes are treated like bicycles under Indiana law
👉 No license, registration, or insurance required
🚨 Yes ...You Still Have to Follow Traffic Laws
• Stop at stop signs and red lights
• Yield the right-of-way
• Ride in the correct direction of traffic
• Follow all standard roadway rules
👉 Being on an e-bike does NOT change traffic laws
💡 Night Riding = Lights Required (Indiana Law)
If you’re riding:
• From ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise
You must have:
• 🔦 White front light (visible 500 ft)
• 🔴 Red rear light or reflector (visible 500 ft)
👉 This applies to all bicycles and e-bikes
⚠️ Class 3 E-Bike Rules (Faster Bikes)
• Must be at least 15 years old to operate
• Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet
⚠️ Not All “Electric Bikes” Are Legally E-Bikes
If it doesn’t have working pedals, it does NOT meet Indiana’s e-bike definition.
Depending on the specs, it may be classified as a:
• Motor-driven cycle
• Moped
• Motorcycle
👉 Which can require a license, registration, and insurance
📍 Ossian Specific Rules (Important)
• E-bikes may be used on walking trails only in manual (pedal-only) mode
• Motor assist is NOT allowed on walking trails
• Motorized vehicles are not allowed on sidewalks, trails, or greenways unless specifically permitted
