Teatown Lake Reservation Teatown is an environmental science, research, and education organization and accredited land trust, protecting 1,000 acres in the Lower Hudson Valley.

Our mission is to inspire our community to lifelong environmental stewardship. Teatown is an environmental education organization offering programs to 20,000 adults and children each year. We manage over 15 miles of hiking trails on our 1,000-acre preserve and hold public and education programs for families and schools as well as special events.

Join us for Teatown’s Annual “A Night in the Woods” Fundraising Gala on Friday, October 9, at 6pm at the New York Botanical Garden .

This year’s theme, Cultivating the Future, celebrates Teatown’s mission and the people helping shape its future.

We’re proud to honor Ziporah Janowski and Dan Riesel, with the Trailblazer Award presented to Emilio Zullo.

Master storyteller Jonathan Kruk is coming to Teatown for TWO special programs on Saturday, September 26, bringing local history to life through interactive storytelling, music, and plenty of audience participation.

Teatown Tales | 2–3pm
Bring the whole family for a lively afternoon of local lore with Jonathan Kruk and live musical accompaniment by “Caffeine” Steve Kelman . Children may even find themselves stepping into the stories! Hear tales of local place names, the formation of the Hudson River, and more.

Revolutionary Teatown! | 6–7:30pm
Adults, this one’s for you! Celebrate America 250 with Jonathan Kruk and historical balladeer Linda Russel as they take you on a musical journey through Teatown’s Revolutionary roots and Westchester’s struggle for independence. Expect stories, songs, pub tunes, and plenty of sing-along fun, accompanied by hammer dulcimer and guitar.

The evening program is a special fundraiser supporting Teatown’s exciting campus renovation.

That’s a wrap on the 12 week Challenge with Wildr Places ! Thank you for joining us in creating better habitat for wildlife. Whether you’re planting native species, adding a bird bath, or simply taking time to notice the nature around you, every small step makes a difference.

Those giant square holes are the work of the pileated woodpecker.

At about the size of a crow, the pileated woodpecker is the largest woodpecker you’ll find in this area. Its powerful, chisel-like beak can carve deep, rectangular holes into trees as it searches for carpenter ants and wood boring beetle larvae hidden beneath the bark.

While the tree may look damaged, these impressive excavations become valuable habitat. Once the woodpecker moves on, the cavities provide shelter for owls, wood ducks, flying squirrels, bats, and other wildlife that rely on tree cavities for nesting and protection.

What if the best thing you could do for your yard was… less? Those fallen branches, leaves, and twigs aren’t yard waste. They’re natural habitat that will enrich your soil, provide shelter for wildlife, and help your yard thrive.

The new challenge, led by Edwina von Gal of Perfect Earth Project, is all about seeing your yard differently.

Your challenge: Leave fallen branches where they land or gather them into a simple brush pile or “wren tent.” As they slowly decompose, they’ll nourish the soil while creating valuable habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife.

Nature already knows what to do. Sometimes the best way to help is to simply let it.
