🔥 DON’T SLEEP WITH YOUR PHONE CHARGING

Charging your phone may be part of your bedtime routine, but where and how you charge it matters.

Modern phones and quality chargers have built-in safety features, but damaged cables, faulty or counterfeit chargers, loose electrical connections, and poor ventilation can still create overheating and fire hazards.

Keep charging safer:

* Use a certified, compatible charger.
* Check cords and plugs for damage.
* Charge on a hard, flat surface where heat can escape.
* Never charge your phone under a pillow, blanket, or on the bed.
* Stop using a charger or device if it becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, or shows signs of damage.

📱⚡ Charge safely before you sleep. A small habit can help protect your home and family.

We often hear “ why so many of you? “ or “ why a fire truck and an ambulance? “. In the attached video South Metro Fire does a great job of explaining what can and does go on at a EMS call.

Ever wonder why South Metro Fire Rescue sends the resources it does...

🚨 LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRES: THEY CAN GROW FROM SMOKE TO A FULLY INVOLVED FIRE IN MINUTES

A lithium-ion battery fire can escalate with alarming speed. What begins as a small amount of white smoke can quickly develop into thermal runaway—a chain reaction inside the battery where damaged or overheating cells generate intense heat, release flammable gases, and spread from one battery cell to the next.

Unlike many ordinary fires, lithium-ion battery fires can:

⚠️ Produce large amounts of toxic and flammable smoke before visible flames appear.
⚠️ Escalate rapidly, leaving very little time to escape.
⚠️ Reignite even after the flames have been extinguished if damaged battery cells continue to overheat.

🔋 Reduce the Risk

• Use only the charger recommended by the manufacturer.
• Avoid charging e-bikes and e-scooters indoors whenever possible. If indoor charging cannot be avoided, charge them in a well-ventilated area away from exits and combustible materials.
• Never charge batteries on beds, sofas, or other combustible surfaces.
• Do not charge batteries overnight or when no one is home.
• Stop using a battery if it becomes swollen, damaged, unusually hot, or emits an unusual odor.
• Store and charge battery-powered devices in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.

🚒 If a lithium-ion battery starts smoking or catches fire, get everyone out immediately and call the fire department. Close the door behind you if it is safe to do so to help slow the spread of fire and smoke. Because thermal runaway can intensify rapidly and release hazardous gases, evacuation is often the safest response.

A small amount of smoke may be the only warning you receive. don’t wait for flames before taking action. Safe charging habits and early action can help prevent a devastating fire.
