History of the Corporation for National Service
Created in 1993, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that engages Americans of all ages in service initiatives - AmeriCorps, which includes more than 21,600 sites, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps NCCC; the National Senior Service Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the Retired and Senior
Volunteer Program; and Social Innovation Fund, which looks for innovative and effective evidence-based solutions to local and national challenges in three priority areas: economic opportunity, healthy futures, and youth development. AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides Americans of all ages and backgrounds with a stipend and education scholarship in exchange for a term of service. More than 80,000 Americans each year are engaged in intensive service through AmeriCorps to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation. AmeriCorps members serve through non profit groups, public agencies and faith based organizations to meet critical needs in education, the environment, disaster relief and other human needs. Over 1 million individuals have served as AmeriCorps members since the program began in 1993. What Benefits do Members Receive? Our year round program consists of 900 hour member positions. They serve for six to twelve months, receive a total stipend of $6,627 and an education scholarship of $2,907. Summer members serve 300 hours, receive a total stipend of $2,208 and an education scholarship of $1,230. We also have several 300 hour scholarship positions. Those members receive an education scholarship of $1,230. You will be representing America at its best, making a lasting difference while promoting the values of community, responsibility and opportunity. You can learn valuable skills while fulfilling the AmeriCorps pledge to "get things done." Each program utilizes their AmeriCorps member in a unique way. At schools, members can assist students to improve their reading or math skills. At recreation programs, members can plan activities and supervise youth. With volunteer programs, members can recruit and oversee community volunteers. Where Would I Serve? The sites for the Oswego AmeriCorps service program vary from year to year. They can be schools, libraries, recreation programs, museums and non-profit agencies.
