Labette County Emergency Management

Labette County Emergency Management http://www.labettecounty.com/department/?fDD=4-5 The director is Larry Steeby and the coordinator is Brandy Grassl.

Labette County Emergency Management maintains the Emergency Operations Center located at 718 5th Street at the Law Enforcement Center. Emergency management is the process of coordinating available resources to deal with emergencies effectively, thereby saving lives, avoiding injury and minimizing economic loss. This protection process involves four phases:

Mitigation -- Acting to reduce the po

ssibility of a disaster occurring or reduce losses from a disaster. Preparation -- Writing plans, identifying resources, negotiating agreements, training and exercising plans and resources. Response -- Mobilization of forces using the resources available to stabilize a situation. Recovery -- Immediate and long-term efforts to help the community return to near normal conditions again. Labette County Emergency Management works in conjunction with area first responders, including law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical services, 911 emergency communications and others, as well as with regional, state and federal agencies when needed.

Early Sunday morning, fire departments from across Labette County — including Neosho Township, Labette #9, and Altamont Fire — along with Labette County Emergency Management, deployed to Southwest Kansas to assist with ongoing wildfires.

Serving as Task Force 19, the team was led by Chief Keith Keller of Neosho Township Fire Department. We were also joined by crews from Crawford County, bringing the total task force to 19 personnel.

Together, the two counties deployed:
• 6 brush trucks
• 2 water tenders
• 2 support trucks

Our crews spent Sunday and Monday working the fire lines near Ashland, Kansas, often putting in 14–16 hour days under extremely demanding conditions.

The crews returned home late Tuesday afternoon tired and worn out — but proud to serve and ready to answer the call again if needed.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice shown by all personnel involved. Please join us in thanking these men and women for their service to Kansas communities.

We would also like to thank our elected officials for their continued support of emergency services and the personnel who stand ready to respond whenever and wherever needed. That support plays a vital role in making deployments like this possible.
