BCEMA is currently responding to assist multiple communities that have been impacted by flooding this afternoon. Flood cleanup kits are being distributed to the Villages of DePue, Ladd, Spring Valley, and Bureau. Watch their fire department and village hall pages for distribution locations; we’ll share that information here as well.

Kits contain a mop, broom, leather gloves, sponge, rubber gloves, Kleenex, bleach, scrub brush, and handles for the brushes.

Over the past few weeks, City Council members, the Ottawa Police Department, and I have received quite a few calls and questions on the street about what appear to be a type of golf cart or side-by-side seen driving around town.

Believe it or not, the vehicles you've been seeing are not actually golf carts at all. They're Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) which are factory-manufactured electric vehicles and fully street legal under Illinois law. We were a little surprised when we first learned the differences too!

To help clear up some of the confusion, the Ottawa Police Department has put together the attached flyer explaining the differences between golf carts and street-legal LSVs.

The big distinction is that while golf carts are generally not permitted on city streets (outside of Heritage Harbor and Woodridge), properly registered and insured LSVs equipped with the required safety features are allowed on roadways posted 30 mph or less.
