EMS WEEK 5/22/20
Today we are honoring our Franklin County First Responders. We cannot say enough about how fortunate we are to have a large group of volunteers willing to give of their time to care for the sick and injured in our county. These folks get woken up in the middle of the night get pulled from family functions just like our crews. They have other jobs but volunteer to respond in their communities to arrive on scene and tend to the needs of individuals prior to our crews. They have assisted us as needed on difficult calls and we couldn't have done it without them. They train with our educators to keep certifications current, to be able to render the most appropriate care. Thank you each and everyone of you for the commitment to serving your neighbors.
Shout out to the following:
Cutler Fire, LOH Fire, Northwest Fire, Ohio Fire, Pottawatomie Fire, Richmond Fire, Wellsville Fire, and Williamsburg Fire...THANK YOU ALL

EMS WEEK 5/21/20
Today is Thursday and it is Save-A-Life Day
We cannot tell you how important it is for each of you to know that in a time of crisis you CAN help! So today we are going to give you the virtual tools to do just that.
First let's learn Hands Only CPR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpEvQuOWME0
Find something around the house perhaps a stuffed animal that you can use to practice with the video. It is easy and it could very well save a life.
Second STOP THE BLEED

This video is animated but does contain some graphic material. Knowing what to do when someone is seriously injured and bleeding CAN and DOES save lives.

EMS WEEK 5/20/20
So today we turn our attention to the "least of these"...children.
Children and safety seem to always go together good or not so good. So when we think of children and safety we must look at potential risks and/or potential harm to them and what measures we can take to prevent those risks and harms.
We know that kids are going to take risks and venture into areas that may be harmful...that is being a kid and we've all been there. But we know there are small things we can do to guide them and hopefully prevent injuries and illnesses. So once again, adding to what we've already talked about as we know it is important to teach our kids to wash their hands, sneeze and cough into their elbow etc. there are other things to teach them as well. Keeping our homes safe by making sure outlets are covered, curtain cords don't hand too low, hot water heaters are set at a lower temperature, locks on gates so that they don't wander out of the backyard...small non-costly things we all can do.
Prevention is our responsibility as adults to ensure they have the best chance to grow up strong and healthy. Teaching them to wear helmets when riding bikes, wear seat belts when in the car, gear them up properly for the sports teams they play on just to name a few. We also need to see that they have nurturing environments, that we are caring for their emotional and mental well being. They are our future and we have been given the wonderful role of directors!

EMS Week 5/19/20
Safety Day
Today we are going to focus on the safety and well being of our EMS folks. Yesterday we talked about mindfulness and meditation as way for everyone in our community to address the stress they have endured. This is something that needs to be followed by our folks as well.
There are risks associated with this career, that is a given. We need to focus on prevention and promoting positive outcomes in our lives rather than negative outcomes. So much more today than prior to COVID-19. So what do we do? Along with those things we mentioned yesterday, the basics and the mindfulness/meditation let's look out for one another. This is Peer Support, looking out for each other on a regular basis..."checking the pulse" of our co-workers. And it isn't just checking but following up. Is everyone cut out to help, no but we all have ears to listen don't we? Too many EMS workers are hurting right before our eyes. So today for EMS Week, let's see each other with a different set of eyes and prevent negative outcomes.

EMS WEEK - 5/18/20
Education Day:
We have been so educated of late on the importance of washing our hands, not touching our faces, making sure we sneeze into our elbow. But what are some other things that we should remember in order to keep ourselves healthy and safe?
Let's remember the basics of eating right, staying hydrated, keeping active, and rest. But what about stress? We've all been living with a heightened amount of that lately. So how about a moment of mindfulness and meditation?
Mindfulness is focusing your awareness on the present moment. When we couple that with meditation we can reduce our stress healing our bodies from the inside out.
So take just a few minutes today, close your eyes and focus on the breaths you take...slowly in filling your lungs your stomach counting slowly to six as you breath in. Now then slowly out counting to six releasing from your stomach and then lungs. Do this a few times then start your day. Focusing if necessary again throughout your day to keep your stress level down. Give it a try!

Our thoughts and prayers...that somehow doesn't seem like enough in cases like this. Life is so unpredictable we know that. When you work in emergency services you understand it even more but you still don't like to think of those we love going to work and not returning home. Our hearts are breaking for officer Mosher's family and for all of his co-workers with Overland Park Police Department, Overland Park Fire, Johnson County Sheriff's and Johnson County Med-Act. Peace and comfort to each of you.

What a beautiful story of love and sacrifice. My son's went to school with her and we live outside Louisburg. It doesn't surprise me the way the community has supported this endeavor. So happy that in this crazy COVID world we live in there are givers! Thanks Ashley from all of us here at FCEMS.
