Original post:

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Police Department requested KBI assistance at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Friday, May 1. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., law enforcement officers from the Ottawa Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team, a combined unit of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa Police Department, attempted to serve a warrant on a homicide suspect out of Kansas City, Missouri. The warrant was being served at a multi-unit residence in the 500 block of South Locust Street in Ottawa.

During the initial approach, the suspect fired from within the residence, striking an Ottawa police officer. The officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital, where he is being treated and is expected to recover.

Officers did not return fire during the encounter. They established containment and transitioned the incident into a barricaded subject operation. The Ottawa Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team was later relieved by tactical teams from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., the tactical teams made entry into the apartment. They located the suspect deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No shots were fired by law enforcement during the course of the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

The investigation remains ongoing.
