What do flowers, American Flag, and Elvis all have in common? I saw them at a local farmer’s market. There were all kinds of food and pies, and some vendors of crafts and jewelry. Brought home an Australian meat pie for Tim. We might have tasted it while we waited for him to come home. 😜It might be delicious!

Never thought I would be grateful for taking so long to finish this project.

I was on track to finish the book Spring 2020, but like many, Covid brought my work to a stand still. I suddenly had three elementary aged kids home from school and my upcoming jobs were cancelled.

Over the summer we decided to move to my husband's hometown in Iowa to be near his side of the family and for him to go back to school to be a PA (Physician's Assistant). The next month and a half was spent doing all the things you wished you did years ago to get the house show ready.

We were on the road by mid Aug 2020, and had moved into our new Iowa home by October. We spent the next couple months getting moved in and organized.

In March 2021 my elderly mother moved in with us. My focus then turned to getting her settled and the support she needed.

September 2021, the kids are back in school and I'm finally back on the project. My first focus is to redo my website so that folks can start viewing and ordering individual prints and getting a functioning blog so you all can be a part of and see the progress of work.

I'm grateful for all that have stayed with me on this quest to help heal and honor the sacrifices of Gold Star Families and Friends and bring light to the dedicated soldiers that render the honors to our fallen.

The project covers imagery and text of The Old Guard and with focus on their memorial affairs mission at Arlington National Cemetery. It includes Regimental Orientation Program, Dignified Transfers, Plane-side Honors, The Casket Team, Firing Team, Caisson Platoon, Presidential Salute Battery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, various funerals, scenics from Arlington, and a section of the history of Arlington.

If you know an Old Guard soldier past or present or a Gold Star Family with loved ones at Arlington, please consider sharing this with them.

Remember to take a moment of silence at 3 PM local time.

What we now know as Memorial Day was originally called "Decoration Day." The three years following the Civil War towns and communities honored those that had fallen in "the great rebellion" by decorating the headstones and cemeteries with wreaths, flowers, and flags. The first original Decoration Day was May 30, 1868. The date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any Civil War battles. Some also think the date was also picked at the end of the month to ensure flowers were in bloom nation wide.

This image was made at my first visit to Arlington National Cemetery as a civilian, as a grad student. It was a moment after the last Old Guard Soldier left the funeral site. A soldier stays with the remains of the interred until the next of kin are out of sight. This way they never leave their loved ones alone.
