Congratulations to our August Yard of the Month winners, Deb and WIlliam Clapsadl!

They moved into their home 23 years ago and have gradually transformed their yard from a traditional lawn into a beautiful “meadowscape” that attracts pollinators and other wildlife. They primarily use rainwater to water their garden, and many of their plants are grown from wildflower seed. They also make their own soil using compost they produce themselves.

Adding to the garden’s character is some eccentric yard art, including an ore cart, a mining drill, and even a croquet set that doubles as a garden edge! Perhaps most impressively, the bears don’t bother their trash, or their yard. Their tip? They keep most of their non-compostable trash in the freezer until the morning of trash day.

Know a neighbor who deserves recognition for their beautiful yard? Nominations are open for September’s Yard of the Month! The winner will receive a $100 gift card to a local business.

PUBLIC NOTICE: It's Poughkeepsie (not Poo-keepsie 💩)
This morning, our Ouray County Sheriff's Office Alpine Rangers alerted us that they had begun the process of cleaning up roughly a 1/4 acre of land near the intersection of Mineral Creek and Poughkeepsie Gulch (along the Alpine Loop / CR-18) that was being used as a makeshift outdoor bathroom.
🪏 Our Rangers cleaned up over 30 piles of used toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, used WAG bags, full dog waste bags, two 5 gallon buckets full of waste, and a random orange bell pepper. And what makes it even worse, is that this was all incredibly close to the Uncompahgre River, which as many of you know, is a water supply source. This is not acceptable and absolutely disgusting.
‼️ PLEASE: If you must relieve yourself in the woods, remember to dig a hole at least 100 feet away from water, then bury it, and pack your toilet paper out with you!
‼️ This is a core Leave No Trace practice that keeps trails clean, protects wildlife, and prevents slow-decomposing waste from ruining fragile ecosystems.
‼️ If you pack it in - please pack it out!
‼️ Please report any areas like this to our Sheriff's Office (970-325-7272) - the sooner we can address these issues the better it is for our environment. Let's not turn a blind eye to bad backcountry behavior. Let's do better.

You've probably seen Ouray's free shuttle making the rounds this summer. Use it to get around Ouray without the hassle of finding parking!

Our free In-Town Shuttle connects downtown shops and restaurants, trailheads, lodging, and popular recreation sites like the Via Ferrata and the Ouray Hot Springs. Whether you’re hiking the Perimeter Trail, soaking in the hot springs, or exploring town, hop on and enjoy the ride!

The shuttle runs daily from 10 AM–9 PM through September on a continuous 60-min loop.
📍Departures from Rotary Park are at the top of each hour
📍Drivers wait about 1 minute at each stop
📍Stop times are approximate and may vary slightly with traffic or loading delays

Tomorrow is Ouray Day! Yep that's right, we're celebrating Ouray's heritage on August 22 from Noon–4 PM at Fellin Park. This event will be held alongside the HighGraders Holiday and the Woman’s Club of Ouray County Annual Chili Cookoff!

SCHEDULE:
⭐ Noon – Ouray Day begins
🏐 1–2 PM – Volleyball Tournament
♟️1–3 PM – Chess Tournament
🟠 2-3 PM – Bocce Ball Tournament
🏃2:30 PM – Kids Races
⚽ 3 PM – Kickball Game
🌶️ 3-5 PM – Public Chili Tasting ($14)
🎟️ 3:30 PM – Door Prize Drawing

Plus, Ouray-area residents can swim FREE at the Ouray Hot Springs Pool after 4 PM by completing a community survey (available at the event). Other activities include a dunk tank, bouncy houses, local artist booths, food vendors, and more!

Mayor Underwood’s Update from the Aug. 17 City Council Meeting

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
✅ Red Mountain Fire and Rescue Authority: A motion to direct staff to bring back an IGA for Council’s consideration failed.

✅ Tourism Marketing Grant: Council approved providing a Letter of Commitment for $20,000 for a grant proposal to the Colorado Tourism Office. If awarded, the grant would provide funding to expand Ouray’s marketing efforts to build more diverse, year-round tourism.

✅ Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Sales Tax: Ouray County is coordinating with the City of Ouray and the Town of Ridgway to approve a ballot measure for a 0.5% sales tax increase that would help replenish disaster response funds. Council will vote on a formal approval at the next City Council meeting.

✅ Road and Bridge Use Tax: Ouray County presented a resolution to include ballot question to authorize the levy of a County-Wide Road and Bridge Use Tax for building and construction materials. Council determined they need more information before a decision is made.
