Last night’s fatal crash in Love County is a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous the roadside can be.

The Fire Department Love County extends our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones grieving this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, everyone affected, and the responders who answered the call.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 2,100 people were struck and killed while stranded or working on U.S. roadsides from 2019 through 2023—more than 420 lives lost each year, on average. Those killed included drivers and passengers outside disabled vehicles, roadside assistance workers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and people who stopped to help.

Behind every number is someone whose family expected them to come home.

Oklahoma’s move-over law applies to ANY stopped vehicle displaying flashing or hazard lights—including a disabled semi, a service truck, or a family’s car.

When there are two or more lanes traveling in your direction, move into a lane away from the stopped vehicle when safe. If you cannot safely move over, or there is only one lane in your direction, slow to a safe speed and proceed with caution.

Look ahead. Put distractions away. Give people on the roadside room.

Everyone deserves to make it home.
