Good morning folks. I would like to thank all of the people who have called in tips on the swimming pool burglary. We are following up on all of them. A town the size of Overbrook, with a limited budget and manpower needs concerned citizens like you. I am the only full time Officer right now. The council has approved the hiring of Officer Dena Manning as our new full time Officer. I’m hoping we can start her very soon. Upon Dena being hired, she will be off to the Police Academy in Hutchinson for 14 weeks. We will still be short handed until she graduates so, we will do the job the best we can and, will depend on you, our citizens to report anything that looks suspicious. Overbrook is, in my opinion, the best and closest nit community in the county and that is something to be proud of. Thanks. Chief

Sometime overnight, between 10:00pm and 7:30 am this morning, a person or persons broke into the Overbrook swimming pool and stole cash, concessions and a cell phone. All totaled, more than $300.00 in cash and concessions were stolen. Our pool is a source of great pride for our city and for someone to break in and steal from it is like stealing from each and every one who swims there. So, if anyone knows who did this or has any information, please contact the Police Department. You will remain anonymous. Thank you. Chief

Even though it is very hot out, we had a great turnout for the bike 🚲 parade this morning. After the parade, we all met at the Veterans Memorial where Mayor John Brady led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterward there were hot dogs, cookies and snow cones. Happy Birthday America.

The Overbrook Police Department wishes everyone a happy and safe Independence Day. I would also like to remind everyone to please put your 4 legged family members inside tonight. Every year we receive reports of cats and dogs running off due to the loud fireworks. I also want to remind everyone of the bike parade beginning at 10:30 this morning. Be at the old school on Ash street around 10:00am. I hope to see you all there and then again this evening for a celebration at the beautiful Overbrook City Lake beginning at 6:30 followed by a great fireworks display. Chief

Hello all. I hope everyone is staying cool today. I just wanted to take the time and give an update on the animal neglect case we are currently working on. Please keep in mind that this is an ongoing investigation so I will not be able to give too many details. Last Thursday evening, I took a call from a resident regarding a dead dog in town. I had the officer who was working that evening go by and check it out and unfortunately, the dog had died while tethered up. Over the past couple of years, we received numerous calls from concerned residents, especially this past winter. Each time we received a call, an officer went to investigate. Most of the time, the calls that came in stated that the dog had no food or water available, and available. K.S.A. 47-1701 requires that food must be made available to the dog/s every 24 hours and that fresh, potable water must be supplied at intervals not to exceed every 12 hours. Without constantly checking the situation and recording each time the dog was fed and watered, there was no practical way to be sure of when the dog was fed and watered. Each time our Officers attempted a surprise visit, there was adequate food and water and shelter. This is not to say there wasn't any concerns but, according to statute, we felt that there was nothing more we could do. There have been no reports over the past several months and each time we drove past the house, it appeared that both of the dogs were being taken care of. That is of course until last Thursday. This tragedy has shaken me and the rest of the Officers to our core. We have all been out with the dog multiple times so we are taking this personally. Laverna Grey, our Assistant City Clerk and Cheryl Miller, our newly elected City Council Member have been working on revamping our Animal Ordinance. This will be a very broad and sweeping change that will force accountability to pet owners and help take some of the restrictions off of the Officers investigating neglect. I realize that for this dog it is too late and for that I am deeply saddened. However, when the new changes are made, this should never happen again. As for this case, when all of the paperwork is completed, I will present the case to the City Attorney. Please be patient and when I have more information to pass along, I will. Thank you. Chief Hollingsworth

Good morning folks. Here’s an update on the stolen vehicle from Overbrook last week. The Jackson County Sheriffs Department was able to find the car in the parking lot of a casino up there and also made an arrest of the suspect, yesterday morning. A huge thank you goes to the Deputy who located the car and for all of the help in securing it. Chief

I know that this sounds over simplified but to First Responders, having your numbers clearly visible on your house, mailbox or elsewhere is huge. I can’t tell you the number of times we, and I mean all Responders, have passed by houses looking for the address. It’s bad enough in the cities but it’s frightening in rural areas when we are called on a person who’s not breathing or maybe it’s a violent domestic incident where a person has been seriously injured and we cannot find the address. The old cliche of seconds or minutes count really comes into play. Please put your address where it can be easily seen from the road. That’s one of the best things you can do to make sure we can find you in an emergency.

This morning, a 2010 dark blue Chevy Impala was stolen from a residence here in Overbrook. The victim was trying to help out a man she just met in Topeka. She agreed to give the man a ride to Wichita. They stopped at the victims house and when she went inside, she left the man in the car with the keys. When she came back out, the car and the man were gone. An attempt to locate was broadcasted and the vehicle was entered into the system. Just another reminder that people sometimes just can’t be trusted. Thanks. Chief.
