June is Aphasia Awareness Month ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain injury, most commonly after a stroke. It can affect talking, reading, writing, and understanding.
Aphasia is NOT a loss of intelligence. There are many different types of aphasia, but the most common is expressive aphasia (also known as Brocaโs aphasia). In this type, individuals know what they want to say but have difficulty getting the words out, or it requires significant effort to produce them.
As you can imagine, this experience can be highly frustrating and isolating.
Thatโs why this month is so important for spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and helping people better understand how to support those living with aphasia.
Stay tuned this month for resources, information, and education. For more information, visit www.aphasia.org
