Introducing a brand new series: Where's Shockey? Every so often we'll share a photo from somewhere our team's been on the job and see if you can guess the city.

First round: Sheila saddled up and rode into town for a meeting with City Council this week and spotted this classic sign along the way. No actual ponies were involved in her commute, but we appreciate the heart of a cowgirl. Think you know which city still runs on Pony Express spirit? Drop your guess in the comments. Council Bluffs came out strong for the first Elevate CB 2050 community workshop, sharing big ideas for what they want to see for the city over the next 25 years. Check out the KETV coverage below to see what residents had to say.

Meet our summer intern, Mica Funderburk!
Mica is a senior studying Urban Planning and Design and is spending her summer at Shockey seeing how the theory and design she's learned in the classroom come to life in real-world practice. A Kansas City native, she sums up her passion for planning in one line: "Planning is a conversation, and I want to be part of the discussion."
Outside of planning, Mica is a self-described tea connoisseur (matcha, chai, boba, green, grey, black... she's not picky). When she's not studying cities or community development, you'll find her tracking down a good stuffed croissant, listening to Marvin Gaye, or daydreaming about her next trip somewhere tropical or a city with a great transit system to explore (true planner energy). Oh, and her favorite color is clear.
We're so excited to have Mica on the team this summer and can't wait to see everything she accomplishes at Shockey!

Planning CB Together!
Last month, our team was in Council Bluffs, Iowa kicking off the CB 2050 Comprehensive Plan and Downtown Master Plan process with City staff and community leaders. We reviewed early community input, aligned on key data, and started building the vision that will shape Council Bluffs through 2050.
Big things are ahead for this community and we are excited to be part of the journey.

Meet our summer intern, Christian Downey!

Christian is currently pursuing his Master of Urban Planning at the University of Kansas and is spending the summer learning more about the planning profession and the consulting world. Originally from Wichita, he’s always had an interest in cities and planning, which led him toward a career focused on improving local communities.

Outside of planning, Christian loves learning languages and currently speaks some German and Turkish, with Spanish next on his list. When he’s not studying cities or community development, there’s a good chance he’s keeping up with MMA, listening to Deftones or Alice in Chains, or planning his dream trip to Morocco. His adventurous side has already taken him to places like Istanbul, Türkiye, where he snapped this photo inside the Hagia Sophia.

We’re excited to have Christian on the team this summer and can’t wait to see all he accomplishes at Shockey!

What a weekend at Turkey Creek Festival!
Shockey had a blast joining the City of Merriam to kick off engagement for the Downtown Merriam Master Plan. Community members stopped by “The Just Right Mix” pop-up to share their vision for downtown by creating their own cassette “track titles” and adding them to the community mix board.

From big ideas to simple moments people want more of, every response helps shape the future of Downtown Merriam. We loved seeing so many residents excited to be part of the conversation, and we can’t wait to keep Moving Merriam Forward together.
