Overland Park Police Department launches targeted I-435 Hwy traffic safety initiative.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Drivers traveling along Interstate 435 in Overland Park are urged to reduce speed, eliminate distractions, and focus on the road as the Overland Park Police Department launches a targeted traffic enforcement initiative that began on Monday, September 21, 2026. Continuing through the end of the year, this heightened enforcement effort specifically targets peak daytime commute hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Officers will focus their efforts along I-435 between Metcalf Avenue and the city’s western border, where surging traffic volumes during rush hours have led to a corresponding spike in collisions.

The primary objective of the initiative is to enhance roadway safety and significantly reduce the frequency and severity of motor vehicle crashes, particularly those resulting in serious injury or fatality. Officers will actively monitor the corridor for dangerous and inattentive behaviors, including speeding, texting while driving, tailgating, and unsafe lane changes. Strict enforcement measures, including traffic citations and formal warnings, will be issued to motorists to foster safer driving habits and protect commuters across our community.

Driving 92 mph in a 45 mph zone through a residential area isn't just illegal it’s extremely dangerous. There is zero excuse for going double the speed limit, especially where families live and kids play.

At that speed, reaction time is practically zero! 😡 No destination is worth risking a life.

The Overland Park, Kansas Police Department and several Kansas Law Enforcement agencies conducted a DUI check-lane on Friday, September 18th, 2026. The check-lane aimed to reduce alcohol-related auto accidents and discourage impaired driving. We sincerely thank our local agencies for their invaluable partnership and assistance with the recent DUI check-lane to ensure safety on our roadways.

5- Drug related (2 of the 5 were also arrested for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia)

This coming Sunday, September 20th, marks National Crime and Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day. Because the official day falls over the weekend, we wanted to recognize and celebrate the exceptional team of analysts working with us here at OPPD.

Our crime and intelligence analysts operate behind the scenes, away from the immediate action that most officers see while out in the community. Yet, their impact on our department's daily success and overall mission is immeasurable. They are the analytical engine driving our investigations forward: they pour over data, map crime trends and connect the dots across multiple cases. They also provide actionable intelligence that helps our detectives and officers identify suspects, disrupt criminal networks, and successfully prosecute criminals in court.
