If you end up in a car accident with downed power lines all around you, your next move could be a matter of life or death. Make sure it is the right one.

REMEMBER: stay inside the vehicle whenever possible, call 911, keep others away, and wait for utility crews to declare the area safe.

This week, we recognize the dedicated team members who help keep our system running safely and reliably. Our right-of-way professionals work year-round to maintain clear access to power lines, manage vegetation and ensure safe distances between trees and electrical equipment. Their work plays a critical role in preventing outages and protecting our community.

Keep in mind that if tree trimming or other tasks are taking you in close vicinity of overhead power lines, there is no reason to take that risk on your own. We have experienced professionals who are happy to come help, just to ensure your safety. Just give our office a call.

Join us in thanking these behind-the-scenes heroes during Right-of-Way Professionals Week!

June is National Safety Month, and safety starts at home.

Join the observance by checking for electrical hazards that might exist in your home. Here are a few more tips for a safer home.

- Inspect the appliances in your home to determine if they are still in working order. Inspect plugs and cords for damage.
- If you have young children at home, fit exposed wall outlets with child-safety covers.
- When you replace appliances, buy the ones with a rating from a testing laboratory like UL.
- Choose lightbulbs with the correct wattage for each lamp and overhead light fixture. You’ll find the maximum safe wattage imprinted on the fixture.
- Put away extension cords. They’re designed for temporary use.
- If you’re hiding any cords under the carpet, move them. Covering electrical cords can cause them to overheat and start a fire.
