With school ending and Memorial Day weekend approaching, we want to remind everyone about the importance of safe and lawful OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) use in our community.
Recently, we have received an alarming number of complaints regarding reckless OHV operation throughout the valley, many involving juvenile riders. Parents and guardians, please take the time to teach your children how to safely operate OHVs before allowing them to ride unsupervised.
As a reminder, here are some important laws and safety guidelines regarding OHV use:
• OHV/ATV use is only permitted on COUNTY ROADS. State highways, including SR-169 (Moapa Valley Blvd), are prohibited except when crossing the roadway.
• Operators riding on public roads MUST possess a valid driver’s license.
• ALL traffic laws apply when operating an OHV on a public roadway. Riders are expected to obey speed limits, stop signs, lane usage, and all other traffic regulations.
• Helmets are required by law. While there may be some discretion regarding certain side-by-side vehicles, there is zero tolerance when it comes to quads and dirt bikes operating without helmets.
• OHV use on public roads is intended for travel to and from recreation areas. Unfortunately, this privilege is often abused.
The ability to operate off-highway vehicles within our community is a privilege extended by the county, and it is important that we all work together to preserve it. Unsafe or reckless driving puts riders, motorists, pedestrians, and the future of OHV access at risk.
We understand OHVs are part of life in our community, and we strive to balance recreation with public safety. However, when unsafe driving is observed or reported, enforcement action may be necessary.
Please ride responsibly, follow the law, wear your safety equipment, and help keep everyone safe this summer.
