Tonight, the Town of Ovid had the honor of receiving the Menzo Case Humanitarian Award from the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce — an award recognizing compassion, service, and the willingness to step up when others need it most.
For Ovid, this award wasn’t accepted on behalf of any one person. It was accepted on behalf of the Community of Ovid. Just one year ago, a devastating Main Street fire shook our village, impacted local businesses, and displaced our neighbors — and the response that followed showed exactly who we are. What could have been a moment defined by loss became a moment defined by unity.
In the days and weeks after the fire, Ovid residents did what small towns do best — we came together. People opened their homes, donated supplies, brought meals, offered rides, checked in on one another, and helped however they could. Local businesses stepped up. Volunteers showed up without being asked. First responders worked tirelessly. Organizations and community partners offered support and resources. And neighbors, friends, and even strangers extended kindness in ways that still mean everything to those who were impacted.
What stood out most was this: nobody asked whose job it was. They just helped.
This evening, the award was proudly accepted on behalf of the community by: Joe Borst (Town Supervisor), Aaron Roisen (Village Mayor), Ovid Fire Chief Tim Westlake, Village Trustee David Wood, and Rob Melgard (Ovid Federated Church).
On behalf of the Town of Ovid, thank you to the Seneca County Chamber for this recognition, and thank you to every person who offered time, help, prayers, donations, and support during such a difficult time. This award belongs to every resident who showed up — and to every neighbor who reminded us what true community really looks like.
Ovid Strong — always.
