This week, members of the Ovid-Middlebury Fire Department joined multiple area fire departments and emergency agencies for another hands-on Agriculture Tractor Rollover Rescue Training.

Agriculture is the backbone of our community, but farming comes with unique and serious risks. Tractor rollovers, auger and PTO incidents, grain bin emergencies, and machinery entrapments can happen in an instant—and when they do, seconds matter.

Continued training like this helps ensure our members and mutual aid partners are prepared with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to safely and effectively respond when our local farmers need us most.

A special thank-you to Dan Neenan with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), Worthington Ag of St. Johns, and AgroLiquid for making this training possible—and to our local farmers for all you do for our community! 🚜🚒

🐾🔥 Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day! 🔥🐾

Our pets are family, and a few simple steps can help keep them safe in the event of a fire.

• Make sure smoke alarms are working and test them regularly.
• Place pet alert window decals on your home so firefighters know how many pets may be inside.
• Keep leashes and carriers near the exit for a quick evacuation.
• Have a plan—and include your pets in your family's fire escape plan.

If a fire starts, get out, stay out, and call 911. Never go back inside for a pet. Let firefighters know if an animal is still inside so we can do everything we can to help.

🌡️ Heat Advisory 🌡️

The next few days are going to be hot, and it's important to take the heat seriously. High temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:
💧 Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
☀️ Limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day (typically noon to 6 PM).
🧢 Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a minute.

Know the warning signs:
⚠️ Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness.
🚨 Heat Stroke: Confusion, loss of consciousness, hot/dry skin, or a body temperature above 103°F. Call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke.

Stay safe, Ovid! 🇺🇸🚒

🔥 BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥

Due to extremely dry conditions in our area, Ovid-Middlebury Fire Department is issuing a temporary burn ban, effective immediately.

This ban includes all open burning, such as brush piles and yard debris. Recreational fires (campfires, fire pits, etc.) are also strongly discouraged until conditions improve.

We’ll post updates when the ban is lifted.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

🚒 Stay safe, stay smart, and help us prevent unnecessary fires!
