It is with heartfelt sadness that the Town of Owasco shares the passing of Stevie Smith, affectionately known to many as “Mayor,” on June 9, 2026.
Steve gave generously of himself to the Town of Owasco for a total of 36 years, serving with dedication, kindness, and pride in every role he held.
He worked full-time with the Highway Department for 24 years and, even after retirement, continued to serve the community part time. He first worked at the Town’s recycling center, then as a part-time laborer at the playground and shelter, and later in one of his most beloved roles as a crossing guard at Owasco School. Just as the community loved Steve, the children loved him equally, and his friendly smile became a treasured part of their school day.
Steve’s commitment to service extended far beyond his work with the Town. He was equally devoted to the Owasco Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for more than 55 years. To the members of the Fire Department, Steve was more than a fellow volunteer; he was a cherished part of their family.
We extend our deepest condolences to Steve’s family, friends, Town coworkers, the Owasco Volunteer Fire Department, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered with gratitude for his many years of service, his generous heart, and the smiling face that brightened so many lives.
