You may have seen our crews have kicked off our 2026 Gas Improvements project over on 18th Street NE.

If you’ve seen the high-vis vests out there, that’s our contractor, Q3, getting to work on some major infrastructure upgrades.

Here is a quick look at what’s happening and why we’re doing it:

🔹 Phase 1: 18th Street SE (Now through late July) We are replacing several thousand feet of aging steel gas main and relocating it straight into the boulevard. Why? To keep the main infrastructure out of the roadway and add a dual gas main for extra system redundancy.

🔹 Phase 2: Main Street between Oak & Elm (Starting in August) Once 18th Street wraps up, operations will shift to Main Street. Crews will be upgrading old steel lines to durable PE pipe in the boulevards and moving a few older gas meters out of basements and onto the exterior face of the buildings.

Both of these projects are being done in tandem with upcoming city street reconstructions. By getting OPU's underground work out of the way before the road crews roll in, we’re saving time, cutting down on construction site congestion, and keeping everyone safer!

Expect some minor traffic shifts, give our crews plenty of room to work, and thank you for your patience as we upgrade our system for a safer, more reliable community!
