We often surround people in recovery when something bad happens.

We show up for the relapse.
The crisis.
The heartbreak.
The loss.

But where are we when something beautiful happens?

Johann Hari and Brené Brown both speak to a powerful truth:
Humans are wired for connection, belonging, and meaning. Yet many people in recovery have lived so long in survival mode that joy itself can feel terrifying.

Getting the apartment.
Falling in love.
Feeling peace.
Being truly seen.
Finally succeeding.

Those moments can trigger fear, vulnerability, and even relapse too.

Not because people want destruction —
but because chaos became familiar and joy feels unsafe.

People in recovery don’t just need support when life falls apart.
They need support when life starts finally coming together too. ❤️

Sobriety is not just about avoiding substances. It’s about reclaiming the space between stimulus and response.

As Brené Brown often references through Viktor Frankl’s work:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”

Addiction shrinks that space. Trauma shrinks that space. Survival mode shrinks that space.

Recovery slowly expands it again.

That moment when anger rises and you pause instead of explode.
When shame hits and you choose honesty instead of escape.
When loneliness shows up and you reach for connection instead of numbing.

That is recovery work.

Sobriety gives people the opportunity to build enough safety within themselves to tolerate the pause. And in that pause, people begin to rediscover choice, identity, values, and self-respect.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is creating just enough space to respond differently than yesterday.

That space is where healing happens.
That space is where accountability lives.
That space is where freedom begins.

Today is a big day for us. 💛
Our first resident, Scott, is moving into his own home.
He came to us when things felt heavy and uncertain—and chose to stay, to be seen, and to do the work anyway. Over time, he didn’t just find stability… he found connection, belonging, and a different way to see himself.
That’s what this is really about. Not just sobriety—but healing in community. Proof that when people are met with connection, structure, and belief, change is possible.
Scott, you helped build the heart of this home. We are so proud of you.
Below are his words—shared with courage and honesty. ❤️

🚲 A small ask that could make a big difference

One of our residents just got a job—and we are incredibly proud of him. This is a huge step forward.

Right now, without a bike, he has to walk an hour each way to get there. With a bike, that becomes an 18-minute ride—making it much more sustainable and setting him up for long-term success.

We’re hoping someone in our community has a working bicycle they’d be willing to donate. Something as simple as a bike could be the difference between struggling to maintain this opportunity and truly building momentum.

If you can help, please message us. Even sharing this post makes a difference.

This is what recovery looks like—real effort, real change, and a community that shows up 💛

🌱 Gary’s Garden Update 🌱
Gary’s been showing up daily—watering, weeding, and trusting the process. And just like in recovery, growth is happening little by little. 🌿

We create the environment, but the work—and the growth—comes from within.

🌿 Gardeners, we need your advice! When should Gary transplant these into the backyard here in southern Minnesota? Any tips to help them thrive?

🌱 Planting Seeds at Rand Recovery Homes 🌱

This week, Gary planted seeds for his garden.

Simple. Intentional. Full of hope.

As we watched those first sprouts break through the soil, it felt like the perfect reflection of the work we do every day at Rand Recovery Homes.

Recovery is a lot like planting seeds.
You prepare the soil.

You create the right environment.
You provide water, light, consistency, and care.

But you don’t pull on the plant to make it grow faster.

You don’t force it to bloom.

Because growth doesn’t come from outside—it comes from within.
In the world of recovery, this matters more than we often talk about. Research consistently shows that lasting recovery is driven by internal motivation, not external pressure. Approaches like Motivational Interviewing and Self-Determination Theory emphasize that people are more likely to sustain change when they feel autonomy, purpose, and belief in themselves—not when someone else wants it more for them.

That’s one of the hardest—and most important—lessons in this work:
✨ We can’t want someone’s recovery more than they do.
What we can do is:
• Create a safe, stable, and supportive environment
• Offer tools, guidance, and accountability
• Show up with consistency, compassion, and respect
• Reflect back to each person their worth—even when they can’t see it yet

Just like Gary’s seeds, each person carries their own potential.

Their own timing.

Their own path.

Our role is not to control the outcome.
Our role is to hold the space where growth becomes possible.

And when that growth happens—when someone chooses themselves, believes in their worth, and steps into change—

🌿 That success is entirely theirs.
And that’s what makes it real.
