MEDIA RELEASE: Tioga County Public Health Awarded $10,000 Grant from Floyd Ho**er Foundation to Support Child Safety Programs

Tioga County Public Health is proud to announce it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Floyd Ho**er Foundation to support two important childhood injury‑prevention initiatives: the long‑standing Child Passenger Safety Program and the newly launched “Helmet First, Ride Second” Bicycle Helmet Program for children. Funding from the Floyd Ho**er Foundation will help purchase child safety seats and bicycle helmets to support the educational and operational needs of both programs.

For decades, the Child Passenger Safety Program has provided evidence‑based education, individualized car seat fittings, and certified child passenger safety seats to families in need throughout Tioga County. In 2025, approximately 75% of car seats inspected through the program were found to be installed incorrectly, highlighting the continued need for hands‑on education and support from Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.

The new “Helmet First, Ride Second” Bicycle Helmet Program expands Tioga County Public Health’s injury‑prevention efforts by providing bicycle helmet education, professional helmet fittings, and no‑cost bicycle helmets for children ages 14 and younger, helping reduce preventable bicycle‑related injuries and promote safe riding habits. Wearing a properly fitted helmet greatly reduces the risk of head injuries in children—injuries that can be fatal or lead to long‑lasting developmental, cognitive, or physical effects—making early helmet use a critical part of keeping kids safe.

Tioga County Public Health would like to thank the Floyd Ho**er Foundation for their continued support of our work educating children and families throughout Tioga County and for partnering with us to help keep our community’s children safe.

Keep an eye out on our website and social media for the official launching of the new “Helmet First, Ride Second” Bicycle Program for additional details. For more information about the Child Passenger Safety Program or to schedule a car seat appointment, please contact Tioga County Public Health at 607‑687‑8600 or visit ph.tiogacountyny.gov.

Ticks are active across New York State, and protecting yourself from tick bites starts with choosing the right insect repellent!

When shopping for bug spray, look for products that are EPA-registered. This means the product has been reviewed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for both safety and effectiveness when used as directed. You can usually find the EPA Registration Number right on the label.

The CDC recommends EPA-registered repellents containing active ingredients such as:
• DEET
• Picaridin
• IR3535
• Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
• Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
• 2-undecanone

When choosing a repellent, consider:
🕷️How long the protection lasts
🦟Whether it protects against ticks, mosquitoes, or both
🕷️Age recommendations and allergy information
🦟How often it needs to be reapplied

Always read and follow the product label carefully.
Proper use helps ensure the repellent works effectively and safely.
Important safety reminders:
• Apply only to exposed skin and clothing
• Avoid eyes and mouth
• Do not apply under clothing
• Avoid spraying near food
• Apply sunscreen first, then insect repellent
• Never spray repellent directly onto a child’s hands — spray it onto your own hands first, then apply

Remember: no repellent works perfectly in every situation. Sweating, swimming, temperature, and time outdoors can all affect how well it works, so reapply as directed. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of tick bites and tick-borne illnesses this season. Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors! 🌿🦟

Great news—this weekend’s weather is going to be gorgeous! 🌤️ Get outside and enjoy it, but remember: if you spot wildlife, give them a little space. Wild animals aren't pets and can carry diseases like rabies. Keep your adventures fun, safe, and critter‑friendly!
