Did you know many everyday products contain chemicals that should NEVER go into your regular trash? 🚫🗑️

When disposed of improperly, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can pose serious risks to our environment, local water sources, and sanitation workers.

Here’s a quick guide to managing HHW safely in Tioga County:

🔍 What Counts as HHW?
- Household cleaners & solvents
- Pesticides & fertilizers
- Automotive fluids (motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid)
- Paints, stains & varnishes
- Fluorescent light tubes

🛡️ Safe Handling Tips
1️⃣ Identify & Label: Keep products in their original containers whenever possible. If transferring, use a clearly labeled, tightly sealed container.

2️⃣ Store Properly: Keep items in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets. Never mix chemicals, as this can trigger dangerous reactions!

3️⃣ Check the Label: Always follow product instructions for specific disposal recommendations, especially for pesticides and automotive products.

4️⃣ Choose Safer Alternatives: Opt for non-toxic or low-toxicity products when shopping to keep your home safer and reduce waste.

❌ What NEVER to Do
- DO NOT pour hazardous chemicals down drains or storm sewers.
- DO NOT toss HHW in your curbside garbage or recycling bin.
- DO NOT burn or bury hazardous materials.

♻️ How to Dispose of HHW Safely
Take advantage of the Tioga County HHW Program! Tioga partners with Broome County to offer access to a permanent Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, where trained staff handle and dispose of materials safely.

For items not accepted—or to search for specific disposal and recycling options—use the search tool at sustainability.tiogacountyiny.gov or visit TiogaCountyNY.gov/Sustainability.

Let's work together to protect our home and community! 🌱✨
