🌧️ Flooding Awareness & Safety in Owens Cross Roads 🌧️

Following the recent flooding that impacted portions of our community, we wanted to take an opportunity to address flood safety, awareness, and the importance of staying informed.

Approximately 35.4% of properties in Owens Cross Roads (about 597 properties) are considered at risk for flooding. While recent FEMA flood map updates removed many local properties from the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA)—meaning federally mandated flood insurance is no longer required for most standard mortgages in those areas—flooding remains a reality for certain parts of our city.

Key factors that contribute to localized flooding include:

🌊 Proximity to the Flint River and local creeks – Low-lying areas near waterways can experience significant flooding during periods of heavy, sustained rainfall.

⛰️ Terrain and drainage patterns – Neighborhoods located near valleys and at the base of Keel Mountain may be susceptible to flash flooding and drainage issues during intense storms.

Many areas of Owens Cross Roads are now classified as Zone X (low-to-moderate flood risk); however, no area is completely immune to flooding. Recent weather events serve as an important reminder that conditions can change quickly and that preparation is key.

✅ Stay weather aware during heavy rain events.
✅ Never drive through flooded roadways—Turn Around, Don't Drown®.
✅ Monitor local weather alerts and emergency notifications.
✅ Know your property's flood risk and have an emergency plan in place.

Residents can view current flood zone boundaries and recent map updates through the Alabama Floodplain Mapping App or review parcel-specific information using the First Street Flood Factor Report.

As a community, we can better protect ourselves and our neighbors by staying informed, prepared, and vigilant during severe weather events. Thank you for doing your part to keep Owens Cross Roads safe.

🦌🌧️ Did You Know? Deer Can Swim! 🌧️🦌
With the recent heavy rains and flooding, you may be surprised to see deer swimming through floodwaters. Deer are actually very strong swimmers and will often take to the water to escape rising flood conditions, search for higher ground, or travel between safe areas.
If you encounter wildlife during or after flooding: ✅ Give them plenty of space. ✅ Do not attempt to approach or rescue them. ✅ Drive cautiously, especially near flooded areas and roadways where animals may be displaced. ✅ Keep pets safely secured.
Flooding impacts not only our residents but also the wildlife that calls our community home. As water levels recede, animals may be found in unusual locations while they return to their normal habitats.
Stay safe, stay alert, and remember that our local wildlife is adapting to these changing conditions just like we are. 🦌💙

Road Closure Notice!

We are placing barricades at Old Highway 431 at Old Big Cove Rd. The river has risen so far out of banks that the water has covered this intersection. The water is several inches deep and muddy. Drivers of vehicles are at risk from the water and the hidden drop off at the edges of the pavement. More rain is on the way. Please be patient when driving and use caution as any area can flood with additional rain.

For the latest updates on road conditions in our community, check back often for status reports from our very own Owens Cross Roads Police Department. We're committed to keeping you informed and safe on the roads!
