Understanding how hydrants work, how to connect to them, and how much water we can get from them using various hose sizes can make or break firefighting operations. That's why our crews trained this week on pump operations while being supplied by a fire hydrant.

Second crew is also shown taking some time to practice another basic skill: ladder deployment.

Practicing skills like pump operations and ladder deployment, while basic, leads to better outcomes in critical moments when they matter most!

It’s been a busy two weeks at DCFD with lots of travel for all!

Over the course of two days all members of our department made the trip to Fort Campbell for our annual ARFF live burn. This training allows our firefighters to practice fighting aircraft fires each year so that they are confident and competent in one of our most important roles at DCFD, manning our airport station and providing ARFF services to Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport.

In addition, Chief Coleman and Engineer McCrady travelled to Orlando Florida for some of the best rope rescue training in the country put on by Elevated Safety. DCFD is always seeking out the best and brightest throughout the nation to train our firefighters for whatever call they may receive!

As EMS week comes to a close we want to take a moment to thank all of our dedicated EMS providers! DCFD is incredibly fortunate to have what we consider to be some of the best in EMS!

DCFD responds with 11 Paramedics, 3 Advanced EMT’s, and 16 EMT Basics.

DCFD responded to 2,837 EMS calls in 2025 (76% of total call volume).

DCFD personnel put in countless hours of training in all areas of rescue and EMS in order to provide the citizens of Daviess County the best pre-hospital care there is.

We would also like to thank our fellow EMS providers that support us everyday including:
AMR - Owensboro, KY, Air Evac Lifeteam 92- Breckinridge County, KY, Air Evac Lifeteam 46 - Evansville, IN, PHI Air Medical Greenville, our dedicated volunteer EMS providers, and providers in our neighboring departments!

Please join us in thanking them for their outstanding work in keeping this community safe!

While run numbers were down this week, members of DCFD stayed busy!

Members of 2nd crew made a trip to Audubon Elementary School to talk about fire prevention and show kids all about Engine 301.

Later in the week, we were happy to host even more kids from Audubon Elementary in our own backyard where they got to see our ARFF apparatus along with some helicopters and other equipment from OWB!

We want to thank Saving Paws Animal Rescue of KY for their generous donation of some new pet oxygen masks. These masks will undoubtedly help us better care for animals affected by structure fires.

We finished off the week at the Daviess County Fiscal Court’s Touch-a-Truck event at Panther Creek Park where members of our rope rescue team demonstrated their skills on the mobile training tower.

It was a great week full of education and interaction with the youth in our community. We want to wish everyone a happy and safe summer!

Run numbers bounced back this week with crews running almost 20 more calls than last week.

This week’s training was officer’s choice. Shown below is 2nd crew practicing some high-angle rope rescue scenarios at our airport station.

Also shown are members of 3rd crew, east station, at Thruston-Philpot Fire Department assisting with a vehicle extrication class.

We are committed to teaching, learning from, and working with our neighboring volunteer departments throughout Daviess County. Joint training builds cooperation, understanding, and makes the fire service in Daviess County better, which is what we’re here for!

At 3:09 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd, DCFD, Thruston-Philpot Fire Department, and Yelvington Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 418 Reid Rd.

Upon arrival unit 400 advised there was a single wide trailer with heavy black smoke coming from the front of the trailer. Unit 331 arrived soon after and deployed a pre-connected hose-line and entered through the front door. Personnel from 331 made there way to a bedroom where they found heavy smoke conditions behind a closed door. They entered and quickly extinguished the fire and started ventilation.

The fire was contained to the room of origin. A rear door was forced and a window was removed to aid in ventilating the structure.

Firefighters on scene said that had the door not been closed to the fire room, the fire would have been significantly worse. As a reminder closing doors helps contain fires from growing and spreading. Remember to close doors at night when sleeping, and if you do encounter a fire, close doors to the room or home!

Thanks to all responding and assisting agencies for their hep in controlling this fire!
