Extreme Heat Safety Advisory for Animals
Public Safety Notice from Officer Kircher – Civil Enforcement

Due to the recent increase in calls involving animals exposed to extreme heat, we would like to remind the public of the serious risks that high temperatures and humidity can pose to animals.
Animals can overheat quickly, particularly during periods of extreme heat and high humidity. Never leave an animal unattended inside a vehicle that is not actively running with air conditioning. Cracking or lowering the windows does not provide adequate protection and does not eliminate the risk of heat-related illness.

Protecting Animals During Extreme Heat
Pet owners are encouraged to:
Provide animals with access to shade and plenty of cool, fresh water.
Bring animals indoors whenever possible during periods of extreme heat.
Limit outdoor activity and keep potty breaks short.
Avoid leaving animals on hot pavement or other surfaces that can become dangerously hot.
If You Observe an Animal in Heat-Related Distress
If you observe an animal showing signs of heatstroke or otherwise appearing to be in distress due to the heat, please contact dispatch so Animal Control Officers can respond.

While waiting for Animal Control Officers to arrive, if it is safe to do so:
Move the animal to an air-conditioned environment immediately.
Apply cool, not ice-cold, water to the animal, concentrating on areas such as the head, belly, armpits, and paw pads.
Use a fan or air-conditioning to increase airflow and assist with cooling.
Do not force the animal to drink.
Extreme heat can become life-threatening for animals in a very short period of time. Please take precautions to protect your pets and help prevent heat-related emergencies in our community.
