💫💫Starla's Story of Hope and Resilience💫💫

Starla came to us in October after experiencing unimaginable loss. Following her husband's relapse and the end of her marriage, she entered the shelter just one day after her son was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. In addition to losing her husband and son, she was also forced to give up her two beloved fur babies.

Upon entering the shelter, Starla was understandably overwhelmed by life's challenges. Through Case Management, she found a trusted source of support. She found someone who would listen, encourage her, and help her navigate her grief.

Her son, Daniel, had once been a straight-A student who was actively involved in church. After the family's losses, his academic performance and behavior began to decline. A referral was made to MentorKids KY, where he began working through his stressors with the support of group mentorship. Starla and Daniel also returned to church and became actively involved at By His Side Fellowship. With the support of their church family, they continued to grow and heal. In addition, both Starla and Daniel began individual and family therapy to address the trauma they had endured over the past year.

As she gained confidence and stability, Starla stepped into the role of Shelter Support, helping new clients acclimate to the shelter and offering encouragement based on her own experiences.

In March, Starla secured employment at Home 2 Suites and has remained there ever since. Through her hard work and determination, she was able to save money and recently obtained housing at Lincolnshire Apartments. What she is most excited about is being reunited with one of her fur babies, who will now be able to come home with her.

Starla is excited to continue moving forward on her journey. Her advice to incoming clients is to work closely with Case Management and be open to the suggestions staff provides.

"They are here for you," she says. "They know where you've been, and they know what you're going through."

Starla believes that if she can succeed, anyone can. "Just look at what a difference a few months can make with some prayers and some support."

Today, Starla's story stands as a powerful reminder that even in the face of overwhelming loss, a little hope, support, and perseverance can lead to healing and a brighter future.

🌱✨ Planting the Seeds of Positivity! ✨🌱Today was such a beautiful, joy-filled day! Tabitha led an amazing "Plant the Seed" activity with our wonderful clients and their children, and the smiles in the room said it all.

🥰🎨🌸 What is the "Plant the Seed" activity? It is a special, hands-on project designed to combine creativity, nature, and mindfulness. The children and parents got to use colorful paint markers and vibrant stickers to decorate big, beautiful flower pots with positive words and bright designs. Once their pots were fully personalized, they filled them with soil and planted gorgeous flowers! It serves as a beautiful, daily visual reminder that with love, care, and a positive mindset, we can watch beautiful things grow! Our families and our ladies truly had the absolute best time, and we are so incredibly grateful we were able to make this happen for them.

💖This was truly a massive group effort, and it wouldn't have been possible without a few amazing people stepping up to help us pull it off:👉 Thank you to Karen and our wonderful case manager Amanda for the beautiful flowers we needed! And for our small pots for the kids 👉 Thank you to Hilary for generously donating the paint markers, big pots, and stickers that brought the craft to life! When we come together as a team, we can create truly magical experiences for our community. Thank you to everyone who poured their heart into making today so special! 👩‍👦‍👦🏡🌷

💥💥 Marilee's Big Move 💥💥

Marilee came to the Daniel Pitino Shelter in the winter months after experiencing homelessness for over a year. During that time, she faced many difficult challenges and was seeking stability and a fresh start. Although adjusting to shelter life was not easy at first, Marilee remained focused on moving forward and rebuilding her life.

While at the shelter, Marilee worked diligently with Case Management, not just at the shelter but also with River Valley Behavioral Health. She partook in life skills classes which afforded her the opportunity to learn budgeting and money management skills. This helped her a lot when she applied for and obtained employment here at the shelter with our White Flag events which take place during the winter months in low temps. She was able to save money and prepare for upcoming housing opportunities. She also mentioned that she learned to trust others more and build meaningful relationships with both residents and staff. Those connections helped encourage her to remain focused during a difficult season in her life.

One of the biggest moments in Marilee’s journey was receiving the news that she was getting her own apartment and today is the day!! For Marilee, having a place of her own means peace, stability, and a chance to begin a new chapter. She is especially excited to have a space where her grandkids can come visit and spend time together. She looks forward to adopting a dog from the animal shelter once she gets settled in. She hopes to return to work at White Flag next season as well and we will be happy to welcome her back.

Please take a moment to congratulate Marilee on her new home and exciting new chapter in her life!!

🎸 We’re Grateful for the Gift of Music! 🎸

Today, Daniel Pitino Shelter received and hand delivered two guitars from the nonprofit organization Guitarists for Good, based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

We applied for this opportunity a few weeks ago, and today these instruments arrived to help support and encourage the individuals staying in our shelter.

Guitarists for Good’s mission is powerful:

“Guitarists for Good is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) charitable organization that shares its love of music by giving the gift of guitars, with a focus on those places serving the temporarily homeless in our communities. We find that the healing power of music offers peace of mind, the ability to cope with struggles, and comfort during a shelter stay.”

We believe recovery and healing involve more than meeting basic needs. Music can create connection, reduce stress, inspire creativity, and provide comfort during challenging seasons of life.

Thank you, Guitarists for Good, for blessing our shelter and our clients with this meaningful gift. 🎶

💫💫 Abigail's Big Day 💫💫

Today is a big day for Abigail! Abigail came to us just a few weeks ago after a disagreement with family. She had nowhere else to go and came into shelter. She was very nervous and scared but quickly found her footing and a few friends along the way. She says that the good people and welcoming staff helped her to become more comfortable. Case Management helped her feel more confident at such a tumultuous time in her life.
Upon entry to shelter, Abigail began working with Case Management and quickly obtained employment at Applebee’s. From there, she expressed interest in returning to school. Case Management helped guide her and introduced her to Ms. Beth at Empowerment Academy, which is home for young adults pursuing educational goals. She was provided a tour of their facility and decided to apply. When asked what advice she would give others entering shelter, she says, “Don’t be nervous and don’t be afraid to set goals.. and go after them!”
Today, Abigail is moving into Empowerment Academy. Moving forward, Abigail plans to enroll in OCTC this fall to begin her journey to a degree in early childhood education. Though she is nervous about yet another transition, she is excited to see what the future holds. Please help us congratulate Abigail on this big move with a like and a share!!
