Observed in the Pollinator Meadow:
Female snapping turtle laying eggs

💡Female Snapping turtles leave the water in late spring to lay their eggs in sandy soil or lawns. They dig a 4-8" hole into which they lay 20-80 eggs (their clutch). The entire process takes up to 3 hours. They then cover their clutch with dirt and return to the water, leaving the eggs for an incubation period of 2-3 months, and the evenutal hatchlings are left to fend for themselves.

This week, Irvine's Animal Care team released 39 healthy fingerlings, grown from egg form, into a nearby stream in Owings Mills.

Irvine received a batch of eggs as part of the Trout in the Classroom initiative where students learn about the lifecycle of Rainbow Trout. The six month observation period provides our students and visitors a front-row seat to learn about Rainbow Trout, how to care for them, and how they benefit our water systems.

Trout in the Classroom is a nationwide environmental education program, serving as a gateway stewardship experience for students to engage and protect the watersheds in which they live. Trout Unlimited
