Did you know that horses are often considered an excellent tool in the care of many mental health concerns? Equine-assisted therapy has proven to be particularly effective in treating First Responders suffering from post-traumatic stress.

In recognition of the role horses can play in helping law enforcement, firefighters, 9-1-1 dispatchers, military, and emergency medical services personnel - Pulse is proud to be a 2026 sponsor of Gaited Advocate Intervention Team, Inc. (GAIT), a 501c3 charity dedicated to rescuing at-risk equines. Earlier this year, SCT Program Director Zach Risoldi was able to adopt a Mountain Horse through GAIT. Appropriately, the horse is now named “Medic”, and with assistance from another of GAIT’s partners, Starry Night Stables Maryland, Zach hopes to one day use Medic to bring emotional support to other emergency services personnel.

This past Monday, we held our quarterly Critical Care Education Day. Covering topics such as pharmacological management of thoracic aortic dissection, pediatric metabolic disorders, and emergency airway management of laryngectomy patients - Pulse is proud to have a group of physicians and retrieval medicine experts willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Our ALS and SCT crews benefit from regular continuing education and skills validation - just one more way in which we work to keep our patients safe. And you can, too! These courses are open to anyone working in the field of specialty care transport; just message us for details.

Thanks to all who attended on Monday! And special thanks to our instructors (pictured):

Dr. David Vitberg - Medical Director and Intensivist Physician
Dr. Osei Owusu - Pediatric Medical Director and PICU Physician
Bryan Picarello - Critical Care Paramedic and Field Supervisor
Zachary Risoldi - Flight Paramedic and SCT Program Director

And a HUGE thank you to our special guest, who were all honored to meet and learn from.... Scott Bachman Sr. of the Baltimore County Police Dept (Retired). Scott worked as a police officer for many years - even after undergoing a laryngectomy! Determined to overcome the many challenges he faced, he continued to protect and serve for many years - jokingly referring to himself as "Robocop" on account of his new, electronically-assisted voice (Servox Electro-Larynx).

Don’t you hate it when you walk into work and there’s a surprise cardiac arrest in the training room? Unannounced resuscitation drills are an important piece of what we do to make sure our providers stay ready!
