On Wednesday, C/Major Gabriella Orme flew as Mission Scanner on a Fertile Keynote mission. A training mission to help train US Air Force pilots intercept low, slow targets. CAP 2027 departed Ann Arbor and entered a holding pattern at the Initial Point over Hillsdale. The "arrack run" was quickly cut short by F-16's. Mission successful.

Remembering Allan McDonald: He Refused To Approve Challenger Launch, Exposed Cover-Up

One of the Core Values of the Civil Air Patrol is Integrity. We often define it as "Doing the right thing even when no one is watching." On January 28, 1986 the whole world was watching. Alan McDonald risked losing everything to do the right thing. Then he risked it all again, to tell the truth. We lost this amazing man over the weekend. Hopefully his lesson in integrity stays with us for a long time.

Allan McDonald, who directed the booster rocket project at NASA contractor Morton Thiokol, urged delaying the launch of the space shuttle before it exploded in 1986. He has died at age 83.

On the first day that the COVID-19 remobilization plan allowed, Cadets from the Owosso Composite Squadron got together for an Aerospace Education Class. This class introduced them to the basics of airframe sheet metal work. Cadets will soon begin work on an airfoil project that will further hone their skills. Future plans include composite construction, aviation electronics, and aircraft engines.

Introduction to using the ATS Pneumatic squeezer

The Pneumatic Squeezer from Aircraft Tool Supply is the most valuable tool for sheet metal work on your airplane. Owosso Composite Squadron Cadets learned how to use it for dimpling as well as setting rivets.

"Quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever done as a pilot." -1Lt John Orme, Owosso Composite Squadron.

"We're here to protect those skies."

Following the events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Department of Defense identified flaws in its security procedures within the airspace surrounding the National Capital Region. In response, Operation Noble Eagle was created to protect the skies of North America.

The CivilAirPatrol routinely flies Fertile Keynote missions with United States Air Force pilots, providing realistic and valuable training.

I have always believed that volunteer service to others is one of the most valuable contributions a person can provide to the world. This guy set the standard. Blue skies and tailwinds to you sir.

Michigan lost a hero today. Our condolences to the family and friends of Lt Col (Ret) Donald “Digger” O’Dell.
Michigan born-and-raised, Digger earned his Air Force pilot wings in 1952. In Fall of 1967, he deployed to Vietnam flying F-105Ds. On 17 Oct. 1967 “Digger” was shot down by enemy fire about 18 miles NE of Hanoi where he remained a prisoner of war for 5 ½ years.
In Digger’s own words from 1972: “I realized almost immediately what it meant to be an American. I looked back over my life and for the first time, it dawned on me how much we, as Americans, take for granted in our everyday way of life. Not only our freedoms, our form of government, but even the little day-to-day niceties such as running water and sanitation facilities that contribute to our day-to-day happiness. Then I realized just how wonderful it was to be an American.”
His military awards and decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service medal with 11 Bronze Battle Stars and the Prisoner of War Medal. He also holds the Daughters’ of the American Revolution Medal of Honor. In 2017, Selfridge ANGB named a street in his honor.
O’Dell continued to serve his country from May 1975 until Sept. 1990 as the Selfridge Base Public Affairs officer & continued to serve as a Selfridge Base Community Council member. He was active in fundraising for the Michigan Winter Special Olympics, founded in 1981 by former Detroit Tiger player, Vic Werts. Each winter, he and over 50 other volunteers, Wertz Warriors, would snowmobile throughout middle and northern Michigan, collecting donations from various establishments and communities. Digger dedicated his life to selfless service and sacrifice.
From Team McClain, a slow, respectful salute to a true American hero - Lt Col (Ret) Donald “Digger” O’Dell.

On Tuesday, Cadets of the Owosso Composite Squadron had a pizza party and spent time looking at the sky. Major Bob Townsend brought his high powered binoculars and got a close up look at the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. Cadets were able to see the Galilean moons of Jupiter, The rings of Saturn, and the mountains on the moon. Cadet Major Orme was able to capture a picture of the moon with a cell phone. In a future meeting, we will be constructing a Dobsonian Telescope complete with photography capability.

On Saturday September 26th, the Owosso Community Airport hosted Operation Wolverine. This is an annual exercise put on by the Michigan Wing of the Civil Air Patrol. This exercise utilizes cadets in all of the command functions. Senior Members are present to provide guidance and ensure safety isn't compromised. We had 8 Aircraft as well as 4 Ground Teams participating. We conducted missions all over the lower peninsula of Michigan. This exercise helped us advance the training of over 100 members and will enhance the Civil Air Patrol's Search and Rescue capabilities.

Cadet Christian Adair came to us as a quiet, shy 12 year old. We have watched him grow, learn, and do some amazing things while in our squadron. Today, the Owosso Composite Squadron says goodbye to Cadet Senior Master Sargeant Adair. He is moving out of state with his family. We hope to see him continue to thrive and we hope that his experience in the Civil Air Patrol serves him well.

After the attacks on 9/11/2001, the Civil Air Patrol was sent out to get aerial photographs and report on the damage to the area. Despite the overwhelming emotional toll of that day, this aircrew was able to focus on their mission. Imagine being the only non-military aircraft in the air anywhere in the United States.

Last Tuesday cadets got to launch the rockets they have had made since before quarantine and others made their first ones. Our Cadet Commander, C/CMSgt Sheldon, is working towards getting cadets their model rocketry badges in the next few months. C/SMSgt Adair also stopped by to say bye to everyone before leaving for Montana. We'll miss you!

Civil Air Patrol - Join Today

The school year is approaching and the Owosso Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol is on a recruiting drive. Our cadet program is for 12 to 18 year olds who are interested in aviation, STEM, military, leadership skills, or just plain having fun. There are also opportunities for adults to participate. This year we will be establishing our Cyber Patriot program. This is a program that teaches about cyber security and cyber warfare. Feel free to message us for further information on our programs and opportunities.

On Monday, August 10th, the state of Iowa experienced a weather phenomenon called a "Derecho". Straight line winds of over 100 mph devastated large areas of the state. Over 400 members of the Iowa Wing were activated and flew multiple sorties to take pictures of the damage. These pictures will help Emergancy Management Agencies determine the best approach for recovery.
https://www.facebook.com/IowaWingCivilAirPatrol/posts/3478981048825066

It was a busy day for the Iowa Wing. With the help of our neighbors, we completed 37+ sorties in the past 36 hours - involving 9 planes, 35+ volunteers, and more than 560 volunteer hours - to take in excess of 3,500 aerial photographs of storm damage in Linn County and surrounding communities. These images will support state and local Emergency Management Agencies in providing storm impact assessments. Thank you to all who volunteered and provided support.

Great day for a Pancake Fly in. Many kids interested in the Barony Chair.
Oh how I miss CAP and specifically the Owosso Composite Squadron! This squadron was and still is one of the best. I enjoyed my time in charge of the cadets as well as many roles at encampment and SAR academy. Civil Air Patrol has made me the person I am today and I can’t thank the organization enough. Keep rocking it Owosso and soon I will visit :)
