"Don't brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the 'winter blues' or a seasonal funk that you have to tough out on your own. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer."

With children reentering the learning environment for the first time in over a year, it's expected that they may struggle to readjust. For neurodivergent children, this transition has been even harder. If you have a student who is struggling in class, they may be having some of the following thoughts or feelings.

"A child not listening during lessons does not necessarily mean they are being disrespectful - children are often extra sensitive to internal and external environments which can impact their ability to listen" shared ADHD Foundation. You can learn more about ADHD and neurodiverse minds at https://adhdfoundation.org.uk/

Reporting child abuse or neglect is a daunting task. The thought of a child being removed, or someone finding out that you were the one who reported can prevent many from reporting. However, most CPS calls do not lead to removal and can help families get supportive services that they otherwise wouldn't have know about or had access to. Reports are also confidential and the parties involved will not know who submitted a report.

If you are unsure whether a situation is child abuse or neglect, call the MDHHS hotline at 855-444-3911 and they will ultimately decide whether to open an investigation. You can learn more about reporting child abuse and neglect and what being a mandated reporter entails by joining our Mandated Reported training at https://bit.ly/Training-VCAC

Teaching children the correct names for their body parts is essential to protecting them from abuse. Teaching body parts not only lets children know that they can come to you with any bodily concerns they may have, but can help protect children online as well as increase the likelihood that a perpetrator will be properly sentenced as the child can properly report what happened.

Approaching this conversation with a child can be uncomfortable, so we have posted four videos teaching children about body safety. Check out the first video at the link below, and learn more at voicesforcac.org

Our Story

TRUTH IN NUMBERS: The pain and cost of child abuse and neglect are literally beyond counting. The statistics don’t lie. • One in four girls and one in six boys have been inappropriately touched before the age of 18. • The FBI estimates that only one out of ten child abuse and neglect cases are reported. WHO IS IMPACTED? Abuse and neglect are unfortunately common occurrences. Much of it happens in secret and in silence, and is thus unreported and not tracked. However, abuse and neglect are not just issues that occur in big cities, urban areas, or among low-income people. The rate of abuse and neglect reported in Shiawassee County is roughly the same as the national rate. It crosses every boundary of race, ethnicity, and income. No one is immune. PROTECTING CHILDREN: When a case of sexual or serious physical abuse is reported, Voices for Children Advocacy Center conducts what is called a forensic interview. We make it safe for a child to tell his/her story and easier for the legal system to prosecute offenders. We also provide trauma counseling to the family and the child. We are the only resource in Shiawassee County that provides this service at no charge to families. PREVENTION IS A MUST: Most of us know that dealing with a problem after the fact is substantially more difficult, painful and costly than taking steps to prevent it in the first place. Unfortunately, this is also true with tragic, often taboo subjects such as child abuse and neglect. Why does someone abuse or neglect a child? That is a painfully difficult question to answer. Often it’s because they were abused or neglected as a child, or because they are in serious financial hardship. That is why we take a three-fold approach to prevention, which includes: educating parents and children through training's and educational materials and providing resources for the families. HEALING AND HOPE: Voices for Children is a place where the pain of abuse can be replaced by the healing light of hope. It is a place where families are reconnected to the heart of the community through caring volunteers and generous donors. WE NEED YOU: A life with no hope is a life not worth living. Children should not be deprived of hope before they even had a chance to savor the joy of life. Someone must speak for children. Someone must take a stand. Someone must recreate the support network that families need, to starve off the stresses that lead to abuse and neglect. PLEASE JOIN US IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILD ABUSE! We are open and operate with the help of generous donors. Visit our website at www.voicesforcac.org for more information to donate to our community wide effort!
