Voices for Children Advocacy Center Shiawassee

Voices for Children Advocacy Center Shiawassee TRUTH IN NUMBERS:

The pain and cost of child abuse and neglect are literally beyond counting. WHO IS IMPACTED? No one is immune.

We are dedicated to serving the child victims and families of child abuse in Genesee and Shiawassee Counties and enhancing the lives of all children through treatment, education, and by increasing community awareness. The statistics don’t lie.

• One in four girls and one in six boys have been inappropriately touched before the age of 18.
• The FBI estimates that only one out of ten child abuse a

nd neglect cases are reported. Abuse and neglect are unfortunately common occurrences. Much of it happens in secret and in silence, and is thus unreported and not tracked. However, abuse and neglect are not just issues that occur in big cities, urban areas, or among low-income people. The rate of abuse and neglect reported in Shiawassee County is roughly the same as the national rate. It crosses every boundary of race, ethnicity, and income. Every child's healing journey looks different.

After a child and their family have been connected with a Family Advocate, they may be referred to our licensed therapist for trauma-focused counseling.

A look into our therapy spaces.

At Voices for Children, therapy is designed to help children:
💙 Process difficult experiences in a safe, supportive environment.
💙 Build healthy coping skills.
💙 Express emotions in ways that feel comfortable for them.
💙 Regain confidence, resilience, and hope.

Because every child heals differently, we offer a variety of evidence-based and expressive therapies, including play therapy and traditional talk therapy, to meet children where they are.

Healing takes time, but no child has to face it alone. We're here to support children and families every step of the way.

A forensic interview is only the beginning of the services we offer.

A look into our advocacy space. This is where parents, caregivers, and siblings may wait while an interview is ongoing.

During the interview, our Family Advocates talk with the family to make sure no child or caregiver has to navigate the healing process alone.

✨ They help families or caregivers understand what comes next.
✨ They connect them with counseling, victim resources, and community services.
✨ They provide support throughout the investigation and beyond.
✨ They answer questions, offer encouragement, and help families find hope during a difficult time.

At Voices for Children, our goal isn't just to help children tell their story, it's to walk alongside them, their families, or their caregivers every step of the way.

Because healing doesn't end when the interview is over. That's where our advocacy begins. 💙
